FIELD HOCKEY
Lisa Charney scored the games only goal 4:24 into overtime to lead the fifth-ranked university of Mary Washington field hockey team (15?1) to a 1?0 Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary?s College Wednesday.
In a game that saw the Eagles hold a 19-1 advantage in shots and 17-7 lead in penalty corners, Charney was able to elude the defensive-minded Seahawks with a blast in traffic with 4:24 elapsed into extra time.
UMW senior goalkeeper Claire Gianelle had no saves for UMW, while Christy Bishop had 10 saves for the Seahawks, with Charney adding a defensive save in addition to scoring the game?s only goal.
Mary Washington will host Wesley College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in another CAC clash as part of Homecoming.
TUESDAY?S GAME
WOMEN?S SOCCER
Jenny Mayo?s goal propelled UMW to a 1?0 CAC win over St. Mary?s Tuesday at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
St. Mary?s led in shots, 18-13, while UMW led in corner kicks, 8?4, with six coming in the second half. Charlotte Owens had 12 saves in goal.
The Eagles (11?1?2, 3?1?2 CAC) host Bridgewater on Saturday at 1 p.m.
