What to Do When You've Outgrown Your Business Management ...

In today?s market space of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions, like Dynamics GP and AX, you?re only as good as the vendor you partner with to ensure you reap all the benefits that the solution offers. Many growing businesses face the challenge that their business solutions partner hasn?t kept pace with their own growth.

?Even though it?s easy to see the value of transitioning to a new solution partner, the actual thought of making the move might seem complicated and disruptive. As time passes the capabilities of your partner may drift into misalignment with your organization?s goals and strategies. The partner that you trusted in the beginning can actually hinder your ability to operate at the level of efficiency that is required to move your company to that next level.

?While many partners offer strong basic support and training abilities to get you started and up and running with your solution, they may lack the capabilities, contacts, experience, depth and breadth to allow you to take advantage of the robust features of your business management solution. To reach your company?s vision and goals, you need not only a software solution but also a partner that can remain two steps ahead so that can support changing demands along the way.

?We spoke to a company that recently changed their Microsoft Dynamics Partner and asked some questions regarding their experience. Here?s what Brent, IS Manager had to say:

?What were you looking for in a new Dynamics Partner?

We felt we had outgrown the capacity of our previous provider. Our previous partner had only a few people on staff. For the most part everything was fine, they did great work, but when we needed someone to go to bat for us with Microsoft it wasn?t there in the way I expected. We also didn?t have a dedicated Account Manager which made things difficult. I feel that for?a company of our size and spend, the voice representing us should be strong. We had grown 500% over 12 years and we felt it was just time to move on.

?How did you find your new Partner?

I asked some contacts within the Microsoft Dynamics community who they would recommend as a reputable partner. I was able to compile a list of 3 potential partners. I then got approval from my contacts to reach out to the customers of these partners because I wanted a non-biased reference. In addition to fees, what I looked for most of all was size of the service department and quality of service. I positioned a ?try before you buy? idea with the first partner in order to ensure I was completely happy before changing partners. I actually didn?t use this test on any other companies as we were very happy with what the first option provided us.

?Did you find the process of formally changing service providers complex or difficult?

Not at all. We signed a paper and it was a done deal.

?What value has your new Dynamics Partner been able to bring to your organization that your prior provider did not?

Flexibility. Our previous partner had only a few people which could make it tough to get things scheduled. Our new partner has a much larger staff so it has been easy getting training and demos scheduled. Also having a dedicated Account Manager has made things easier ? she has been invaluable as a sounding board!

?Do you have any advice for other company?s thinking about making a transition to a new Partner?

Don?t be afraid. We were overly committed to our previous partner because they were local and we were convinced we needed someone that could be on-site in a short amount of time. When we looked back and analyzed our prior years ? the ?localness? never really came into play.

?Not all partners are created equal. If you suspect that it might be time to branch out and evaluate other Partners who are better equipped to support the growth of your company, there?s no better time to start doing your research than right now.

If you want to work with an experienced Microsoft Gold Certified Partner who can answer the tough questions and deliver improvements that matter, our team is ready to help.

Berlusconi sentenced to four years for tax evasion

MILAN (Reuters) - Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was sentenced to four years in jail on Friday for tax fraud in connection with the purchase of broadcasting rights by his Mediaset television company.

The 76-year-old billionaire, who was convicted three times during the 1990s in the first degree before being cleared by higher courts, has the right to appeal the ruling two more times before the sentence becomes definitive. He will not be jailed unless he loses the final appeal.

The ruling comes two days after Berlusconi confirmed he would not run in next year's elections as the leader of his People of Freedom (PDL) party, ending almost 19 years as the dominant politician of the center-right.

Milan judge Edoardo d'Avossa told a packed court that between 2000 and 2003, there had been "a very significant amount of tax evasion" and "an incredible mechanism of fraud" in place around the buying and selling of broadcast rights.

The court's written ruling said Berlusconi showed a "natural capacity for crime".

Berlusconi lawyers Piero Longo and Niccolo Ghedini said the ruling was "totally divorced from all judicial logic", adding that they hoped the "atmosphere" at the appeals courts would be different.

Berlusconi, one of Italy's richest men, became prime minister for a second time in 2001 after winning a landslide election victory. Even while he was prime minister, he remained in effective charge of Mediaset even though he had handed over control of day-to-day operations, the court said.

The four-time prime minister and other Mediaset executives stood accused of inflating the price paid for TV rights via offshore companies controlled by Berlusconi and skimming off part of the money to create illegal slush funds.

The investigation focused on television and cinema rights that Berlusconi's holding company Fininvest bought via offshore companies from Hollywood studios.

The court also ordered damages provisionally set at 10 million euros ($13 million) to be paid by Berlusconi and his co-defendants to tax authorities.

"POLITICAL HOMICIDE"

The flamboyant Berlusconi, who is still on trial in a separate prostitution case, resigned as prime minister a year ago as Italy faced a Greek-style debt crisis, handing the reins of government to economics professor Mario Monti.

Angelino Alfano, secretary of the PDL, said the ruling proved once again "judicial persecution" of the media magnate, while political rival Antonio Di Pietro, a former magistrate, hailed the decision, saying "the truth has been exposed".

Should the ruling be confirmed on appeal, Berlusconi would also be forbidden from holding public office for five years, and from being a company executive for three years.

"This is not a sentence, but an attempt at political homicide," Fabrizio Chicchito, the PDL's chief whip in the Chamber of Deputies, said referring to the ban from holding office.

Now that Berlusconi has said he will pull out of politics, he may be focusing more on his business empire, which includes Mediaset, AC Milan soccer club, and Internet bank Mediolanum.

Shares in Mediaset, Italy's biggest private broadcaster, fell as much as 3 percent after the ruling, and are down about 50 percent in the last year.

The broadcaster has been struggling against rivals like News Corp's broadcaster Sky Italia and a host of online media, while its core advertising revenues are feeling the pinch of the recession.

The court acquitted Mediaset chairman and long-term Berlusconi friend Fedele Confalonieri, for whom prosecutors had sought a sentence of three years and four months.

Berlusconi has owned AC Milan since 1986 and they have been European champions five times under his leadership. But the club's fortunes have dipped in the past couple of seasons amid cost cutting, prompting repeated rumors of its possible sale.

He also is still on trial in the separate "Rubygate" case in which he is accused of paying for sex with a teenaged nightclub dancer when she was under 18 and thus too young to be paid legally as a prostitute. He denies the charges.

What an Actor Looks for in a Screenplay - Guest Article by Molly Kerr

Having recently been asked to contribute to a couple of sites/blogs I started thinking. This blog has always been?written?exclusively from my point of view, perhaps I should open it up to guest contributions. So I posted on my facebook page asking for articles from colleagues along the following lines:

Actors - what do you look for in a script when choosing roles?
Directors - how do you like to work with writers?
Producers - what attracts you to a?project?
Writers - how do you pick which projects to work on?

The first of which is from an actress I met only recently at a Perth Film Network function, Molly Kerr. She certainly left an impression and has an excellent blog and a website where you can see examples of her work.?Molly has "...completed shooting for three music videos and performed in numerous live theatre productions. Her most recent on screen role was as an anarchist for Dylan Tilbury's feature length independent HOTEL."
Over to you, Molly!

This isn?t as representative as I would like it to be. So I have below a series of points that are of personal importance to me but other actors may disagree. Hey, that rhymed!? ? ???

Don?t put too much action or description in.

Actors may be here purely to make your vision come true. Maybe. In reality, however, every project with an actor is collaborative because we are going to interpret the role in a thousand unexpected little ways. From speaking in a way you hadn?t thought of to dancing on certain words to fighting with the other actors for screen time. Everything we do will make your dream a little less dream like and a little more ?what the hell?? It?s what we do. Every line of action or description is prescribing our performance to us. When we have less room to interpret the script we feel less creative and eventually this leads to resentment. So keep the ?shining tears trickled down her golden cheeks? for your Twilight parodies. Of course, there is the exception of screenplays written for direct audience consumption. They should be as easy to read and be as descriptive as any prose. But that?s because no actor is needed to interpret the screenwriter?s vision.

Use subtext in dialogue.

I get excited when I read a script and the plot isn?t spelled out for me. I like this kind of problem solving. ?How am I going to show the audience that while I?m talking about eating chicken tonight I?m actually thinking about the bomb that?s about to go off under my feet?? This is the ultimate opportunity for actors to get creative and collaborative with the blocking to make the screenwriter?s intentions come through. It takes more skill to reveal important details in subtext and draw the audience into the intrigue than to give away the plot and take the audience for a bunch of lazy idiots. As an audience member I enjoy those moments when something important in the character dynamic has been revealed through a performance and circumstance and the dialogue has only indirectly illustrated the point. As an actor I love the feeling that I?m putting together pieces of a puzzle, not presenting the already formed picture. That?s boring.

Unless it?s important, don?t tell me what the character looks like.

I really would like to make my own decisions about how to realize the nuances of this character and appearance is one of these. If I read the script without character descriptions and I don?t figure out that the character is Emo then you probably haven?t written an Emo character. You?ve relied on your character description to portray that character type without allowing it to inform your writing. If you use it ironically, you have a hulking big hippy with dreads portraying a businessman then I can appreciate that you?re challenging audience assumptions about aesthetics and character. However, you might lock yourself into a dilemma. You pictured a sweet petite blonde actor for that role when the person that captures her character most effectively is a black haired giantess! When I?m writing I like describing the characters because I like creating people and appearance is an important part of creating. When I?m acting, I feel the same way and want as much to do with creating the characters as possible. If I don?t think I have a salient feature for a particular character I won?t change the character to suit me, I?ll change myself or suggest a different actor. There is a particular character that I would love to portray, she?s little and dark haired like me but I picture her voice as so much more sultry and husky than mine can ever be (unless I have swine flu). I wouldn?t audition for her because I think that particular feature is so clear in the characterization that it would be wrong to portray her for my own selfish reasons.

Make my character want something.

I can only do so much. If you make it clear from the plot that my character is after something then I will do everything to make sure my character gets it. I may fail. I may die in the attempt (or my character anyway) but I will do all that I can to get it. Of course, you don?t need to spell it out for me. But do make it interesting. And do make it high stakes. If I don?t think it?s worth wanting, why would any audience engage with my performance? I can suspend my own disbelief so the audience find my particular part of the screenplay engaging but they won?t be able to suspend theirs so what?s the point. We are here to serve our creativity and the audience. If my character wants something, make it worthwhile. Why have you bothered to write a whole screenplay if it?s just about wanting a sandwich? Is that worthy? Of course it isn?t! Unless you?re a girl sandwich and it?s a boy sandwich and you have to run away from the evil human mouths to be whole again and not be eaten. It?s about wanting a sandwich, still, but the stakes are higher. (Yay, a sort-of-pun.) Probably don?t go for something so bizarre, though. There isn?t much audience over 5 years old for that kind of thing.

Please for the love of God let the plot make sense!

Probably should have been number one on the list but I was doing the bullet points for clarity rather than importance. Oh my goodness! Please, why did the children leave their dead mother on the back lawn and walk into the wilderness to visit their cannibalistic aunty? I DON?T KNOW! I don?t understand and I got to read the script over and over. The audience watch it with our brilliant performances, the DOPs great cinematography and the director?s best attempt to make it make sense but still? what is going on? Why? Why? Why? If the audience can?t work out a character?s motivation, that isn?t always the actor?s fault. The actors probably tried to come up with an explanation that makes sense but it was never written down, never shown in the film and therefore doesn?t affect the understanding of the audience. Please let the script make sense. Don?t give us important looking cutaways that don?t pay off or flashbacks that leave more questions than answers. Making the audience wonder what has happened is not the same as making them wonder whether you were on drugs when you wrote it! Just answer this question: Why?

Thank you for allowing me to rant. I have a screenplay to read, now!

Out.

There you have it - goals, stakes, subtext, clarity and don't be too prescriptive with description. All things we should be doing as writers and refreshing to hear it reinforced from a different perspective. Thank you Molly.

Do you agree? Do you have other elements you look for? Do you rhyme??

IHeart Organizing: A Surprise Craft Room Before & After Story

Every once in awhile you hear a story that really hits close to home.? A story that does some tugging on your heartstrings. ? The kind of story that fills you with emotion and all you can do is wish there was a way to help.?

That is what happened to me.

I apologize in advance for the lengthiness of this post, but it is a story I just had to share...

I offered to keep the family's identity private, however, I was granted permission to share the amazing outcome that the love and kindness that a set of friends gifted to another friend.? And my husband and I were fortunate enough to be a part of it all!?

A local family has been managing through the recent news of an illness.? They have been incredibly strong through their recent findings, however, as you can imagine, it is never easy.? Knowing what this family has been going through, a few close friends wanted to give the Mrs. an extremely happy surprise.

The Mrs. is an avid scrap-booker.? It is her hobby and passion to document all of the cherished moments in her life.? She loves taking photos of her family and creating endless books of their stories and memories.? With all of the supplies that have come with this hobby over the years, she has grown an extensive collection of papers, tools, embellishments, etc...? They had the room in their home to give her a designated place to work on her scrap-booking with her children and friends, and her husband installed some built in furniture to give her workspace and storage.

The room gets lots of love and over the years of being used, it has slowly lost order.? I think it is so wonderful when a mom has a special place to call their own, one to find quiet time within and to take a moment to enjoy a hobby.? However, I also know, being a mom myself, that there is limited time to work on our hobbies, so when time is up, Time. Is. Up.? Things get left out and unfinished until those next spare moments come around.? I also know, that moms have a tendency to put their family and the rest of the home before themselves and their own personal spaces.?

So when the Mr. and Mrs. had to travel out of town, a few of her friends stopped by to clean their home.? And what they saw was a neglected room that needed a little bit of organizing and tender loving care.? They wanted to give their friend a room update, a place to go to smile.? To enjoy her hobby.? To feel relaxed.? And that is when I got the call.

I was asked to help them give the room a little surprise makeover, and in an instant I said in a single word, "Yes-please-I-can't-wait-to-get-started!"?

We decided to let the Mr. in on the surprise since we would have to take over the room at times when they would be away.

The project started out with a quick visit to the space.? I just needed to get an idea of what we were working with and a scope of the project.? I used my phone to take a few photos of the room {which are now the oh so fab, "before" shots}.

What I noticed right away is that the Mrs. sure has great taste.? And loves bins!? Which of course, I can totally appreciate!? She had working systems in place, and some that needed a little bit of attention.? She also works on the side as a Thirty-One consultant, and the desk is intended for that business.?

After the initial visit, I had a few ideas swirling.? I knew that I would have limited time, the help of two amazing gals {her dear friends initiating the update} and the my hubby.? And that is when fate stepped in.

Sometimes the craziest of things happen and the second I said yes to this project, I also received an email from The Original Scrapbox.? They wanted to offer me a product to use in a blog project.? It didn't take me long to connect the dots and ask if I could use it for this specific project, and gift it to the Mrs. we were helping out.? The kind friends at the Scrapbox smiled and said, "Absolutely!"?

So while we waited for the Minibox to arrive, we also waiting for the Mrs. to head back out of town for a few days, so we could takeover her space!

And then the time came.? The Mrs. was heading out for a week, the Mr. would be home during the week and leaving to meet up with her over the weekend.? We figured we had two "after work" nights and one weekend day, to get the room completely done.

Day 1:?

The girlfriends and I started out by completely emptying the room.? I always love to start with a blank slate, it seems to make the process a little less overwhelming.? By emptying out the room, we would be able to assess current storage {which I knew she already had plenty of} and be selective about what came back into the room and where it would get sorted down to.? When emptying the space, we made sure to keep all of her current "in process" stacks together the best that we could, and be careful to maintain any systems that she already had working.

We gave the room a quick cleaning, and while we did that, the boys were busy in the garage assembling the new Minibox {which totaled two and a half men and two and a half hours}.
Once the room was emptied, cleaned and the Minibox was assembled, we started the process of slowly bringing things back into the space.
The Minibox comes with 40 {yes 40!} canvas bins and we started out by spreading them around the room and giving each one a category.? As we started bringing things back into the room, we matched up the item to the necessary bin.? Easy peasy!

And that is how the room looked at the end of day 1!? Job well done guys and gals!

Day 2:

Day two consisted of getting the rest of the belongings into the room.

I thought it would also be fun to line the back of the built in bookcase, with fabric, to divide some of the blue on the walls and add a little backdrop to all of the cute storage she had.? To do so, without damaging her walls or bookcase, we wrapped cardboard, which was cut down to size, with the fabric and stapled the fabric in place.

Sorting, sorting and more sorting, was the name of the game on day 2.? The Mr. had already left and one of the two gals couldn't make it, so it was down to me, the hubs and friend C.? The three of us managed to get the entire room sorted and everything put into its place.

Since this wasn't our personal space, we made a pile of anything we didn't think belonged or had a home within the room.? We saved the pile for the Mrs. to go through when she returned and after the room was revealed.

Here is how the room looked at the end of day 2:

Crazy amazing eh??

Day three was the final day intended for the finishing touches.? This is my favorite part!? Label making, accessorizing and giving the room one last sweep to get it ready for the big surprise reveal!

I started out by labeling everything on the bookcases....? I added my favorite Martha Stewart bookplates to anything that didn't already have a label holder:

I could tell from the items that were already in the space, that the Mrs. loves fun colors and patterns.? So, I pulled out the Washi tape to spice up all of the labels on the bookshelf!
I also labeled all of the bins we had sorted out in the Minibox!? I even added a strip of Washi tape to some of the bins to give them that pop of color that I and the Mrs. both seem to appreciate!
While I labeled, friend C added decorative paper to the fronts of the plastic drawer carts...
Ready to see the final "after" photos?? Here is how the space looked after just a few short hours on day 3!

Here are some of the other details to this new, super fun and organized space.

I dedicated the bookshelves to hold anything that she may want to grab at while working at her counter.?

This also included larger, heavier items, such as all of her scrapbooks and her stacks and stacks of scrapbooking magazines, all of which were sorted down by type.
While sorting, we found a lot of special moment items.? Ticket stubs, important papers from school, etc... Those items went into a few drawers that I labeled, "Memories".
The goal was to keep both of her work areas, nice and clear.? Nothing but a large cutting mat and a caddy to hold all of her printed photos, remained on the built in counter.
I didn't mess with the contents of her cabinets or drawers.? They were already all divided out by categories that made complete sense.? {Cutting tools, adhesives,? paper punches, etc...}
Since she often scrapbooks with her kiddos, it will be so so very great to have two work spaces!? I topped the Minibox with some pretty, "Welcome Home" accessories set out on a portable tray.
Above the Minibox, to balance out the single frame, I spray painted two of these super fabulous metal trays we found in her room {her Mr. gave me the OK}.? They now act as memo boards for her favorite family photos.
But let's take a moment to chat about the inside of the Minibox.? See how nice and compact it is?? When not in use and all closed up, it is only 37" wide.? However, not only is it on casters that make it easy to move around the room, the all of the doors are open, it can span up to 9 total feet!
All of the doors are on hinges that allow the doors to continue to open and open again for more storage.? Unfortunately, this room didn't allow it to span the entire 9 feet, however, even when opened as far as the room would accommodate, she still has access to all of the storage it boasted!? And when I say it boasted a lot of storage, I mean it!

It comes with 40 bins which range in multiple sizes.? We opted to mix and match in some of the storage she already had, with the new bins that came with the Minibox.? Of course, she can always update that as she pleases once she gets settled in the space.

All of the shelves are adjustable, allowing you to customize how you want to use it.? We divided out the colored paper onto open shelves, since I thought it would be easier to just pull the paper straight out, vs. pulling out a bin to sift through.? However, all of her "in process" projects, each got their own large bin.? The bins are large enough to fit 12x12 paper, embellishments, stickers, etc... and now she can just pick which project she wants to work on, pull out her bin and pop it up onto her workspace.? When she is done, back into the bin things go, and back into workbox.? So simple!? Hopefully that will help her to maintain a clear workspace each time she wishes to project.

In the smaller bins, that is where we sorted down different types of stickers, brads, embellishments, boarders, etc...
I was even able to leave her a couple of empty bins!? There was just sooo much storage in one, space saving cart.? It is pretty incredible!

Oooh, and just to show how much the Minibox was able to hold, check out how many empty bins we were left with after this project was over!

The Mrs. will never have to purchase another bin again! {You're welcome Mr.}

On top of the workbox, inside the workbox, and on the wall above the workbox, lives her entire stash of ribbons!?

And to mix function with decor, we also put some categorized embellishments in simple mason jars.
As I mentioned earlier, this gal is a Thirty-One consultant.? She needed a place to manage that side business, so on the other side of the room, I gave her a Thirty-One desk.
We installed a dry erase board, where she can put down party dates and order deadlines...
Used a clear storage divider to hold her thank yous and catalogs...
Found this super awesome little spiky thing to hold some of her business cards...
Made a rubber-band ball for her desk... and organized the drawer too!
And that completes the tour!

But here is the best part.? The part that I am sure you had to be there to fully understand and comprehend the awesomeness.... The REVEAL!

The Mr. came home a day before the Mrs. and turned the doorknob around, locking the Mrs. out of her new room and hiding the key.? The kind friends, myself and my husband all met back at the home after work.? Her friend wrote the Mrs. a letter and left it on the door, explaining the reason for the makeover and why we all felt she was so deserving of her new space.? We all stood outside of the door, waiting for her to open it and see her new room.? Goosebumps my friends.? I had major goosebumps.?

And then she saw it.? And the tears came.? Tears of happiness.? Tears of joy.? Tears of relief, of love, of gratefulness and gratitude.? It was one of the most amazing moments I have personally experienced and one so hard to put into words.? It felt so amazing to be able to completely surprise someone with a new space that they can just come home and enjoy.? This is why I love to do what I do.?

So lets just take one more minute to look at the before and after photos of the incredible new craft room:

A huge thank you to the gals that invited me to be a part of this incredible process!? It was so much fun to get to know you and to be able to do this for such a wonderful woman and mother.

Disclosure: The Original Scrapbox provided me with one Minibox to review and share within this post.? I am committed to sharing only products that I feel my readers will benefit from and enjoy, and all opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Asset Protection Planning: What other asset ... - MS Estate Planning

There are several other techniques available; mostly for the ownership of business assets. ?As discussed in Chapter 14, corporations, limited liability companies, limited partnerships, and business trusts are effective ways to shield the business owner from personal liability. ?As a practical matter, business owners are often called upon to personally guarantee certain business obligations, which would negate the benefit of the business entity. ?Also, as a comprehensive estate plan, the use of irrevocable trusts and qualified personal residence trusts can protect certain assets. ?All of these planning techniques must be coordinated to have maximum effect.

It's the company's dime: Spend wisely ? Business Management ...

How you spend company money speaks volumes about your character, at least as far as your boss is concerned, Jennifer Winter writes for TheDailyMuse.com. When you?re on company business, sometimes you might not be sure what the protocol is for how much is too much when spending company money. The following tips will come in handy:

???Watch and learn. When traveling in groups, do as everyone else does. Don?t go for steak and wine if everyone else is eating salad and drinking tea. Ask for restaurant recommendations from co-workers when going out-of-town.

???Don?t be greedy.?It can be easy to get carried away on business trips, especially those that involve fancy dinners. Remember: If you wouldn?t buy it with your own money, don?t buy it with the company?s. So don?t go overboard with the drinks, appetizers and desserts.

???Don?t be cheap.?Asking for re??imbursement for trivial things may be interpreted as disrespectful to the company. Try not to charge to the company things you would normally buy in an average workweek.

???Always ask for receipts. Many people either don?t do this or do this incorrectly. A good idea is to take the hotel stationery envelope and keep it with you. Wrap a rubber band around your wallet as a re??minder to ask for receipts and stuff them in the envelope. Make notes on receipts for unusual expenses.

These general guidelines will help you prove that you can be trusted with company assets. ?

Sudan says Israeli jets bombed arms factory

EPA

A picture made available on Oct. 24, 2012 shows a fire following an explosion at Yarmouk military factory in Khartoum, Sudan. The fire has been contained, but it is still unclear what triggered the explosion.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Sudan on Wednesday blamed Israel for a huge explosion and fire at an arms factory in Khartoum that killed two people. Israel's defense minister declined to comment.

"Four military planes attacked the?Yarmouk?plant. ... We believe that Israel is behind it," Sudan Information Minister Ahmed?Belal?Osman told reporters, adding that the planes appeared to approach the site from the east.

Asked by Israel's Channel Two News about Sudan's accusations, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said: "There is nothing I can say about this subject."

Similarly, U.S. officials who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, said, "We have no comment. We can?t help you on this.?

Some Pentagon officials suggested that the explosion could have been accidental and said there were ?conflicting reports? about its cause.

Sudan, which analysts say is used as an arms-smuggling route to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip via neighboring Egypt, has blamed Israel for similar blasts in the past, but Israel either has refused to comment or said it neither admitted or denied involvement.

The powerful explosion at the?Yarmouk Military Industrial Complex in southern Khartoum rocked Sudan's capital?before dawn Wednesday, sending detonating ammunition flying through the air and causing panic, Sudan's official news agency and local media reports said. Nearby buildings were damaged by the blast, their roofs blown off and their windows shattered, according to the reports.

New fighting in Sudan's Darfur region, several killed

"Sudan reserves the right to strike back at Israel," Osman said, saying two citizens had been killed and that the plant had been partially destroyed. Another person was seriously injured, he added.

Officials said earlier there were no reports of deaths, although some residents had suffered from smoke inhalation.

Around 300 people gathered in the evening at the courtyard of a government building where the Sudanese Cabinet was meeting in an emergency session, shouting "Death to Israel" and "Remove Israel from the map."

Conflict displaces 900,000 in Sudan border areas

"Israel is a country of injustice that needs to be deterred," Vice President Ali Osman Taha, standing next to President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, told the crowd. "This attack only strengthens our firmness."

The governor of Khartoum state initially had ruled out any "external" cause for the blast, but officials later showed journalists a video from the vast site showing a huge crater next to two destroyed buildings and what appeared to be a rocket lying on the ground.

Sudan forces burned, looted remote border village: activists

Osman said an analysis of rocket debris and other material had shown that the attack had been engineered by Israel, which Sudan views as an enemy.

Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Mohamed Hussein and senior officials visited the site of the explosion and held an emergency meeting with top army generals while security forces sealed off the area surrounding the complex and halted traffic.

Israel kills 3 Hamas militants after Qatari emir leaves Gaza

In 2009, a convoy carrying weapons in northeastern Sudan was targeted from the air, killing dozens. It was widely believed that Israel carried out the attack on weapons shipment headed for Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. Israel never confirmed or denied that. Sudanese parliamentarians denied that weapons were transported in the area.

In 1998, the United States used cruise missiles to knock out a Khartoum pharmaceutical factory suspected of links to al-Qaida in the aftermath of the terror group's bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed 224 people.

Sudan has long been a major hub for al-Qaida militants and a transit for weapon smugglers and African migrant traffickers.

College Football Schedule 2012: LSU has week off before Alabama game

It's an underwhelming slate of games for area teams this weekend, as all eyes look towards the latest edition of the Game of the Century in Baton Rouge on Nov. 3.

After narrowly escaping College Station with a victory last week, LSU kept their chances at a SEC and national title alive going into a home game with Alabama in two weeks.

The Tigers, who survived a gauntlet of three games in a row with ranked SEC opponents with only one loss, will gladly enjoy the bye week to get ready for a game that ... will get a lot of publicity from ESPN.

Meanwhile, Texas and Texas A&M both have a chance to pad their conference records with road games against the dregs of their respective conferences in Kansas and Auburn, respectively. Before the season, you would have expected something like that to be said about the Jayhawks, but the Tigers spectacular implosion has been quite the spectacle.

Rice and Houston, neither of whom have exactly set the world on fire in 2012, will be hosting some middling C-USA opponents on Saturday as well.

Texas Longhorns at Kansas Jayhawks (12 p.m. ET, FSN)

Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Rice Owls (1 p.m. ET, CSS)

UTEP Miners at Houston Cougars (4:30 p.m. ET, CSS)

Texas A&M Aggies at Auburn Tigers (7:00 p.m. ET, ESPNU)

Florida picked to finish second in SEC basketball poll

Published: Monday, October 22, 2012 at 4:42 p.m.
Last Modified: Monday, October 22, 2012 at 4:42 p.m.

Florida received more significant preseason accolades heading into the 2012-13 men's basketball season.

The Gators were picked to finish second in Southeastern Conference's annual preseason men's basketball poll. Senior guard Kenny Boynton was named to the All-SEC first team, while junior center Patric Young earned second-team All-SEC honors.

Florida returns three starters from a team that finished 26-11 and reached the Elite Eight last season.

No surprise, Kentucky was tabbed to finish first in the SEC. The Wildcats lost all five starters from its national championship team but will replace them with an incoming freshman class that is rated the best in the nation.

Kentucky received 17 of 24 first-place votes in the poll. Florida received five first-place votes, while Missouri and Tennessee each received one first-place vote.

Boynton averaged a team-high 15.9 points per game last season. At 1,589 career points, Boynton is 501 points shy of breaking Ronnie Williams' UF scoring record.

Young started 32 of 37 games at center for the Gators last season, averaging 10.2 points and 6.4 rebounds with 30 blocked shots. He had four double-doubles last season.

Florida, ranked 10th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, opens the season on Nov. 9 against Georgetown in the Navy/Marine Corps Classic on the deck of the USS Bataan in Jacksonville. After a game against Alabama State, the Gators play their third game of the season Nov. 14 at the O'Connell Center against No. 21 Wisconsin.

?The intensity has been there in practice,? Florida senior forward Erik Murphy said. ?Not just the coaches but in us, too, knowing the first couple of games are against somebody we're going to need to turn it up against. We've got to be ready.?

First Person: Social Security's Solvency is Top Priority for this Florida Senior

Florida's seniors, who represent about 22 percent of the state's voting-age population, may play a large role in how the state swings on Nov. 6. As Election Day nears, Yahoo News asked Floridians near or at retirement, Medicare and Social Security age to share their thoughts on the election. Here's one perspective.

FIRST PERSON | TAMPA, Fla. -- Rarely are emotions so highly charged as during presidential campaigns. This year is no different. And as we get closer to Election Day, the barbs and rhetoric reach frenzied heights in an effort by each camp to convince people of the merits of each candidate's platform.

Although I am not yet retired, my husband, at 72, is and, at 63, I'm fast on his heels. I have chosen to not take Social Security yet, as long as I can continue to work as a medical transcriptionist. While I have an IRA and my husband a 401(k), Social Security still represents a significant supplement to our retirement income.

Both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have tried to reassure seniors that Social Security is safe and will remain safe for the foreseeable future. Medicare is another question, as Obamacare is close to becoming law. It mandates that 32 million currently uninsured people will either buy insurance or pay a penalty, and I submit the penalty will be far cheaper, and folks will remain uninsured by the millions.

Moreover, Obamacare mandates that insurance companies no longer refuse coverage based on pre-existing conditions. This spells higher prices for everyone to subsidize such a mandate. Obama would have Americans believe our insurance premiums will be reduced with his plan, and that simply is insulting to my intelligence.

Close to retirement, I am a concerned about Social Security because of all the media fanfare about the insolvency of the United States. I'd like to imagine that my part of the money is locked up somewhere, growing, albeit at a glacial pace, but still growing, until I am ready to claim it. If I were to claim my share now, at 63, I would receive about $1,100 versus 24 percent more at full retirement age. It is a savings of 8 percent per year, which I could not get in a bank. I worked for it, and I'd like to get it when the time comes. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Social Security is there as the buffer I have been promised all these years.

Romney suggested during the debates that our debt situation is fast approaching that of Greece. Such a scenario worries me. After all, in all my working years, I have contributed to Social Security. It is a form of savings account I have come to rely on. I am appalled at the debt that Obama has incurred. Through bailouts and the collapse of the real-estate market, our economy has sustained a shock that must be reined in.

Romney provides the only hope at fixing our financial mess. I have no guarantees he will make good on his promises, but Obama has imperiled our nation in many respects. My vote will go for the promise of a new day.

Sprint LG Optimus G review

Optimus G

The Optimus G brings LG's 'A' game to Sprint, but is great hardware enough to sign on for two years?

A high-end, premium LG smartphone on a U.S. carrier is like a hen's tooth -- pretty darn rare. While other manufacturers were busy releasing top-tier products on the carriers in this country, it seems like LG was focusing more on the value space, and its products were lackluster to a dyed-in-the-wool Android fanatic.

There's something to be said for bringing the best of the bottom-end, and the various LG Optimus One phones really were a standout for the entry-level market, but as someone who is lucky enough to get to play with the heavy hitters LG has released in Europe and Asia on occasion, I've been waiting for this. The Optimus G is the best LG has ever offered, and it's a taste of quality hardware from LG that everyone needs to look at twice.

But there's a dark side to LG's foray into Android. Ask anyone who was excited and rushed to buy the T-Mobile G2X. I was one of those people (I bought one for myself and one for the wife) who was awfully impressed with the quality of materials and the build of the phone itself, and felt the small niggling software issues would soon be ironed out. Here we are, over a year later, and still waiting for those fixes. To put it frankly, the software on the Optimus G needs to be great out of the box, because there's no guarantee that it will ever get any better.

Read on to see what I think of this one, and how my week with the best-spec'd phone ever made (so far) has turned out.

Scarborough subway line may have to wait: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford

TORONTO?-?

Mayor Rob Ford won?t push a Scarborough subway ahead of a downtown relief line if that goes against TTC staff advice.

Ford ? who campaigned on building a subway to Scarborough ? admitted Monday he?ll take TTC CEO Andy Byford?s advice when it comes to expanding the transit system despite the mayor?s promise.

But Ford again repeated his belief that more subways would be built in the city, including the Sheppard subway.

Byford has been voraciously advocating the need for a downtown relief line.

?I?m all in favour of subways,? Ford said. ?I?m glad that people are thinking about subways.

?Now which one is a priority? That?s the one we?re going to have to sit down and talk about.?

Despite council?s decision earlier this year to build the Eglinton LRT at street-level in Scarborough rather than below ground, Ford said he still wants the LRT to be buried in the city?s east end.

?And I want the Sheppard (subway extension) and eventually Finch (subway),? he said.

?Now if the relief line is more important, let?s get our priorities ? what benefits the people of the city? That?s what we have to look at right now.?

Asked if he?s open to the relief line being the city?s next transit priority, Ford said it is up to Byford.

?I?m open up to the idea that benefits the city, that benefits the users of the TTC,? he said.

?I campaigned on subways. We?re going to get subways ? the relief line, the Sheppard line, Eglinton hopefully will go underground.

?Subways are coming to the city one way or another.?

TTC chairman Karen Stintz said the issue isn?t the line but the funding to pay for it.

?That remains our ongoing challenge,? Stintz said.

She said transit commissioners on Wednesday will likely recommend further study of the downtown relief line.

?We already know we need it and the question remains how are we going to pay for it,? Stintz said. ?We do need to get to the funding discussion, there is no question. And if we only talk about lines on a map then we will only ever have lines on a map.

?We need to find a way to pay for them.?

Are you Team Subway or Team Streetcar?

Yahoo's 3Q earnings, revenue top Street's forecast

(AP) ? Yahoo ushered in Marissa Mayer as its new CEO with a third-quarter earnings report that topped analyst estimates.

The results announced Monday show Yahoo's net revenue barely grew at a time when advertisers are spending more money marketing their products and services online.

Nevertheless, the numbers were slightly better than analysts projected. Yahoo Inc. hired Mayer away from rival Google Inc. to orchestrate its latest turnaround attempt in mid-July, shortly after the quarter started.

Investors applauded the early progress reflected in Monday's report. Yahoo shares gained 48 cents, or 3 percent, to $16.25 in extended trading.

The company earned $3.2 billion, or $2.64 per share, in during the three months ending in September. Most of that profit stemmed from a one-time gain of $2.8 billion that Yahoo pocketed by selling half its stake in Alibaba Group, one of China's most successful Internet companies. Yahoo earned $293 million, or 23 cents per share, at the same time last year.

If not for the Alibaba windfall and a restructuring charge, Yahoo said it would have earned 35 cents per share. On that basis, the company topped the average earnings estimate of 26 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Yahoo's revenue for the quarter totaled $1.2 billion, a 1 percent decrease from last year. But that comparison is misleading because last year's revenue included revenue that Yahoo no longer books because of an Internet search advertising partnership that diverts some of its ad sales to Microsoft Corp.

Wall Street focuses on net revenue ? the amount of money Yahoo keeps after paying its commission to Microsoft and other sites that run its ads.

Net revenue in the latest quarter rose 2 percent to $1.09 billion ? about $10 million more than analysts had predicted.

Although it wasn't substantially above the analyst target, the net revenue figure came as a relief after years of letdown under the previous five full-time and interim CEOs that have run Yahoo since the company turned down an opportunity to sell itself to Microsoft for $33 per share in May 2008.

The meager revenue growth illustrates the challenges facing Mayer as she tries to come up with a strategy that will persuade advertisers to rely more on Yahoo's website instead of Google's extensive marketing network and Facebook's popular social networking service.

"We're taking important steps to position Yahoo for long-term success, and we're confident that our focus on quality and improving the user experience will drive increased value for our advertisers, partners and shareholders," Mayer said in a statement.

Mayer, 37, is expected to elaborate on her plans during a Monday conference call with analysts.

Start Up Businesses And Online Marketing

It is a rather unfortunate fact that today?s businesses are facing one of the most difficult economic times in history. As a result of the historic double dip recession, a banking culture on the verge of collapse and the ever growing EU crisis businesses of all sizes and of all industries are now forced to do whatever it takes in order to survive.

Marketing has long since been the forefront of the commercial industry; a chance for businesses to expand their brand, grow their customer base and come out on top amongst their competitors; in short, marketing allows for longevity and ultimate survival. Naturally as technology and the internet are now the forefront of today?s society; it is now online marketing that holds the key to success and why internet marketing consultants are constantly thrusting the terms search engine optimisation and pay per click at any and all business they come across.

In a world where over fifty per cent of the population now head directly to Google when in search of a product or service; it is only natural to state that a website is a must have tool however, as online marketing grows in popularity the internet is now a competitive arena and hence why many businesses are now choosing to undertake SEO strategies and PPC campaigns that, when implemented correctly can ensure the business achieves a desirable ranking position for profitable keywords. By ensuring a website and an overall online presence is fully optimised with the profitable industry keywords, todays businesses are improving their chances at achieving growth in an otherwise futile economy however if readily established businesses are only just embracing online marketing when should a new business jump on the bandwagon? The honest answer, is from the moment the business idea is born.

Between ten and five years ago, a website was a sufficient extra tool to aid business growth however, in todays growing society it is ultimately the difference between success and failure and thus why, any start up business of any size must have this in mind and be ready and willing to build an online footprint from word go. A strong website must be ready to target your online customers however, pretty designs aside it can only do so with the assistance of SEO.

Do not wait to face a struggle before implementing SEO; in fact for any start up business, SEO services should be considered from the moment of design conception. Images, layout, design, usability, loading time and content must all be created with SEO in mind in order create the ideal user experience and in effect the ideal, search perfect website. Whilst waiting for a website to launch, a company could begin establishing an online presence through external blogs, guest blogging and a social media presence on sites including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn; these can be ideal to create a ?buzz? and now that social media sites play an ever important role in Google?s search algorithm; there could not be a better place to begin.

A start up business is in effect bringing something new to the table and that is what SEO is all about; whatever your product or service may be, new or old, a start up will have a great deal more flexibility. The end goal of search engine optimisation is to increase the number of people arriving at a site and is a method that may not only work alone but alongside external marketing measures and with strong keyword targeting, site structure and content targeting, the potential to enhance growth is ready from the onset and in fact, gives a start up a far better chance than a current, long standing business.

SEO in a start up business is most definitely a foregone conclusion, if not to work alone and put the start up at an advantage but to work alongside external marketing measures. Do not get us wrong, the implementation of an SEO strategy is always difficult whether the business be they new or old however, no business should wait till they end up facing struggle before they take action; SEO can provide a real level of growth from the word go; why wait any longer?

While Microsoft?is touting next week's launch of Windows 8 as the savior of the computer industry, PC makers and analysts are increasingly skeptical that the new operating system will lure consumers away from tablets and smartphones.

Even Intel, which makes the processors at the heart of 80 percent of personal computers, doubts that Windows 8 will have a big impact on sales. CEO Paul Otellini said this week that he's "very excited" about the new operating system but expects the usual holiday bounce in PC sales to be half of what it usually is. Clearly, PC makers are being cautious about building big stocks of Windows 8 PCs.

"We haven't had a chance to really judge how consumers will embrace this in the PC space or not," Otellini said on a conference call with reporters and analysts.

Research firm IHS iSuppli expects the industry to ship 349 million PCs this year, down 1 percent from last year's all-time high. Although small, the decline would be the first since 2001.

In the U.S., a mature market where consumers are gobbling up tablets, PC sales have already been declining for two years.

Meanwhile, Apple has been doubling sales of iPad tablets every year since the first model was introduced in 2010. In the April to June period, Apple shipped 17 million iPads, while Hewlett-Packard, then the world's largest maker of PCs, shipped 13.6 million PCs, according to Gartner analysts.

Smartphones, which were a niche market before the 2007 launch of the iPhone, outsold PCs last year, even though PC sales were at a record high.

The PC market is still big, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told the Seattle Times last month, "and Windows 8 will propel that volume."

The software is a response to the popularity of tablets. It tosses out many Windows conventions in favor of a radical new look that's designed to be easy to use on a touch screen. With Windows 8, PC makers are releasing a slew of laptops that double as tablets, either with detachable screens or with screens that fold down over the keyboard.

But Citigroup analyst Joe Yoo is even more pessimistic than Intel that Windows 8 will spur a turnaround in sales of desktop and laptop computers. It could turn out to be a "non-event" in terms of getting people to buy PCs, he said.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Thursday, the company reports results for the quarter that ended in September, and executives will likely talk about prospects for the rest of the year.

Brian White at Topeka Capital Markets said Taiwanese PC component suppliers aren't seeing any pickup in orders ahead of the Oct. 26 launch of Windows 8.

"The sentiment around Windows 8 was overwhelmingly negative," he said after meetings with suppliers. "We believe the PC industry is headed for a muted December quarter and well below the ramp expected with new products."

Analyst Mary Jo Foley at UBS is "leery" of Windows 8, noting that it has an entirely new look and feel. It could either be a big success, she said, or it could confuse customers and turn them off. She noted that Microsoft is set to support the launch with its $1 billion in advertising, the most it has ever spent on a campaign. That support will be critical for overcoming resistance to the new user interface and reinvigorate interest in PCs, she wrote.

PC makers began the year with the hope that a new wave of lightweight laptops called ultrabooks would provide a sales lift. But ultrabooks are still expensive, with most models around $1,000, and they haven't been compelling enough to overcome the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets.

Now, PC makers are in a tough spot when it comes to taking advantage of Windows 8, said Patrick Moorhead, a former chip executive who now runs research firm Moor Insight. Adding a touchscreen into a PC is expensive, and they're competing with tablets that are much cheaper. Meanwhile, Microsoft hasn't made much effort to add new features for mouse-and-keyboard PCs to Windows 8.

"If you're a user, you're asking yourself: 'Why do I need to buy this new notebook, if my old notebook can still do what I need it to do? Instead, I'll buy a new phone or a tablet,'" Moorhead said.?
