Cameron Hatheway writes;
Normally I don?t review superhero comics because let?s face it; it?s all been done before. I can?t tell you how many review copies are currently sitting in my inbox that are carbon copies of anything the Big Two are putting out nowadays, only with sketchier art and unimaginative storytelling. To willingly tackle the superhero genre, you need to bring something fun and original to an audience who has seen everything already, while not going the way of Mark Millar and having your characters swear every other word balloon or getting killed-off in splattertastic ways.
Enter artist extraordinaire Jamal Igle and his Kickstarter baby Molly Danger. The project made over $50,000 last August, and through the folks over at Action Lab Entertainment Molly Danger is about to become your new favorite superhero in the first volume debuting October 15th. While I did contribute to the Kickstarter, that doesn?t mean I?m going to be biased in the following review; it?s just hard to find anything to nitpick since it?s such a damn fun comic for all ages.
Molly Danger is an extraterrestrial with magnificent powers who has been protecting the town of Coopersville for the past 20 years. Oh yeah, and she?s a 10-year old girl. Well, she?s not really 10, she?s actually much older, but her species are immortal and the aging process works differently for them. As soon as Molly started kicking bad guy butt, the arrival of the Supermechs kept her constantly busy. Little about the Supermechs origins is known, but there?s obviously some connection between them and Molly.
While Molly Danger is the one who goes toe-to-toe with the Supermechs, she can?t do it alone and is assisted by Danger?s Action Response Team, or D.A.R.T. for short. Comprised of civilians and ex-military, D.A.R.T. works with the police and government to help keep the rest of the Coopersville population safe. One new recruit, Austin Briggs is a pilot who has wanted to work alongside Molly for years, and is known for not always following orders in the heat of battle. He has his own battle at home trying to gain the respect of his stepson Brian, so he?s hopeful that his new job at D.A.R.T. will help bring the two of them together.
Both Molly and Austin are rebels when it comes to the chain of command, and neither enjoys being forced to play by the rules. Molly also doesn?t enjoy the solitary confinement that comes with the job, for her superiors don?t want her fraternizing with the civilians because she?s immensely powerful in comparison. She?s caught between both worlds and emotions, being the last of her kind with no one to talk to. Austin seems to be the solution to some of her woes.
Jamal Igle does a superb job at world building, for there?s a rich history and colorful cast of characters from the get go. The Supermechs are forces to be reckoned with, and Medula in particular was quite sinister with his giant war machine. Igle created a strong female character that kicks ass and isn?t sexualized in any way, making it a perfect fit for a publisher like Action Lab. If that wasn?t impressive enough, Igle?s penciling combined with Juan Castro?s inks made the action-packed scenes really pop throughout the book. The art is gorgeous from beginning to end, and really shows what brilliance can be accomplished when given the freedoms of telling the story you want to tell.
There?s a lot of fun to be had in this first volume as we discover who Molly is and what she stands for, while simultaneously setting up the plot to future events. I had the biggest smile on my face throughout, and anxiously await the second book. Be sure to pick up a copy when it hits stores this October, or read it now on ComiXology.

Businesses and people interested in participating are encouraged to sign up for the tournament, which will be held Sept. 2 at the Canyon Oaks Golf Course.
The Guns and Hoses tournament, which is hosted by businesses Rossini Construction and ServPro, is in its third year.
The money that is collected goes toward the Chico Firefighters Association toy drive and the Chico Police Officers Association bicycle drive, said Rob Rossini, owner of Rossino Construction. He hopes many people show up to have fun, but most importantly, help put presents in children's hands come Christmas.
Memberships to participate are going fast, said Steve Kleppe, ServPro manager.
Individuals participating in the tournament pay $95 and it's $325 for a foursome team.
An unwrapped toy is required at check-in or a payment of an additional $20.
This event is all about the children, Rossini said. People can sponsor or donate anywhere from $20 to $2,000 or donate riffle items even if they can't attend the tournament.
It's important to give back to the community, he said. It's a pretty good feeling to be out there.
Donations and checks can be mailed to ServPro at 775 Entler Ave., Chico, CA 95928. Checks should be made out to Guns and Hoses Golf for Toys.

SANTA CRUZ -- The Chicago-based railroad company operating the county's Branch Rail Line has unpaid debts locally and across the nation, raising questions about the company's finances and long-term viability.
From scenic upstate New York to sunny Southern California and across the Midwest, Iowa Pacific Holdings, owner of the Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway, is struggling to keep up with its bills. It owes tens of thousands of dollars to Central Coast businesses alone, from large media outlets to small railroad support crews to even a tool rental shop.
"There's companies all over," said Mark Buchol, owner of St. Louis-based D & M Transportation Consultants, which repairs passenger cars. "I'm not bad-mouthing any one person there, but they had a lack of a business plan. I not sure what anyone was thinking when they started spending all this money without any plan to pay it back."
Iowa Pacific officials acknowledge a difficult financial period, blaming the federal government for clawing back millions of dollars in loans to the company to repair railroad tracks across the county. They say they are working to pay off debtors and remain committed to operations in Santa Cruz.
The county Regional Transportation Commission bought the line from Union Pacific last year for $14.5 million, seeing it as a 32-mile opportunity to develop rail service and provide the backbone of a future trail through some of the most scenic territory in the nation.
The agency picked Iowa Pacific to run the line from among a handful of suitors after a prior operator backed out. Though the arrangement is not expected to net the Commission a financial windfall, commissioners cited Iowa Pacific's size, and presumed stability, as a factor in the selection.
Kevin Busath, Iowa Pacific's vice president of strategic planning, acknowledged the company's financial issues, saying what should have been a windfall -- the sale of a profitable Arizona line -- turned into a liability when the Federal Railroad Authority sought the return of more than half of a $64.4 million loan due to the sale.
"To be perfectly blunt, we've been slow paying vendors in the Santa Cruz area and all across the country," said Kevin Busath, Iowa Pacific's vice president of strategic planning. "We're working our way out of this. Within two or three months we should be current with everybody."
IN FOR THE LONG HAUL
Busath said Iowa Pacific is a long-term investors in the area, believing freight operations near Watsonville will grow with a new biodiesel plant and the development of cold-car services to serve the region's agricultural industry.
He also said the company is a believer in passenger rail, and plans seasonal "Train to Christmas Town" passenger service near Watsonville during the winter holidays, since planned repairs to the La Selva Beach trestle prevent a return to Santa Cruz' Westside in 2013.
"We really see this as a significant source of revenue," Busath said.
Started in 2001 and headed by former Amtrak Vice President Ed Ellis, the company has been in an expansion mode for years, most recently acquiring a controlling interest in Cape Rail Inc., which runs a Cape Cod heritage train. The company targets underperforming lines, boasting in one presentation, "We should be called the Kennel Club because we only buy the dogs."
But their arrival locally has not the boost many had hoped for. While some vendors said they have been paid -- a representative of Santa Cruz' Flyers fuel depot said Iowa Pacific paid for its diesel fuel with a credit card -- several rail-related business have not, and local advertisers who helped promote the Train to Christmas Town also went unpaid, according to sources who asked not to be identified because they hoped to receive payment.
"The list of people that are owed money would probably fill several pages of your newspaper," said one local debtor, who asked not to be identified.
A BOON, BUT BUST TO SOME
Iowa Pacific runs freight lines and excursion trains across the country, as well as two in the United Kingdom. To some, they have been a shot in the arm to local economies, reviving underused lines and bringing exposure through tourists eager to revisit a bygone era.
One such city might be Alamosa, Colo., a town of fewer than 10,000 residents and the base of Iowa Pacific's San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad. The city's per capita income of $19,500 is less than two-thirds of Colorado's average, according to the U.S. Census, and some see the company as a boon.
"They've brought a lot of tourism here from people wanting to ride the train. They've got a lot of events on the train that have been really popular. They've been absolutely fantastic community partners," Alamosa Mayor Kathy Rogers said. "My experience with them, and the city in general, has been nothing but positive."
But some local contractors are owed thousands of dollars. One is Torres Plumbing and Heating, which helped rehabilitate old cars for tourist excursions.
Owner Leonard Torres declined to specify how much he's owned, and said Iowa Pacific has paid some but not all of its debt. It is a big burden for a small company, he said.
"It's a substantial amount of money," said Torres, who said he's received letters from Iowa Pacific but has been unable to discuss the debt with them. "I can't get a real live person to talk to."
In upstate New York, Iowa Pacific has a revenue-sharing deal with Warren County for the scenic Saratoga and North Creek Railroad, which runs along the Hudson River. But the company lagged behind on payments for years until coming current in July.
Warren County Deputy Treasurer Robert Lynch said the Iowa Pacific has shared internal financial documents with the county. However, he added, the county has never seen audited statements, which are required under the deal.
'$15 MILLION IS A LOT'
Busath said the financial problem stem from problems with a $64.4 million federal loan through the Federal Railroad Administration, the regulatory agency overseeing U.S. rail operations. Known as Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing loans, the loans are low-interest, long-term loans the federal government hands out to fund track improvements and repairs.
After getting that loan -- which required Iowa Pacific use its nine rail lines as collateral -- the company received generous offers for an Arizona line that served booming copper mining operations, the Arizona Eastern Railway. The reported sale price exceeded $90 million.
"This offer was so good," Busath said. "After three to four seconds of deliberation, we decided to accept the top offer."
Since it sold a line that was to benefit from the loan, Busath said Iowa Pacific expected the federal government to recall part of the loan. The company put $35 million into an escrow account, but, internally, expected federal regulators to seek $20 million.
But after months of foot-dragging, the government sought all $35 million, Busath said. In May, the Sentinel filed a federal Freedom of Information Act request for documents related to the loan.
The Federal Railroad Administration still has not provided the requested documents. An FRA spokesman on Friday said he did not know why the request was taking so long.
In the meantime, Iowa Pacific had spent against the $15 million the company expected back from escrow, Busath said. The left them short of cash to pay vendors.
"Fifteen million is a lot for us," he said.
Ask what the company did with the rest of the money from the sale, Busath said it was used to pay down debt and fund other projects.
FINANCING FALLS THROUGH
In May, Iowa Pacific said it had reached a preliminary deal with two investors to infuse the company with needed cash. At the time, the company its freight carload had nearly doubled during the prior five months, largely the result of a fracking boom in West Texas oil fields, where the company owns two lines.
"The new financing will improve our liquidity and enable us to continue to make improvements to track on the Texas-New Mexico and West Texas & Lubbock, which are experiencing a tsunami of new traffic," announced Ellis.
But that financing fell through. Busath said Iowa Pacific is still in talks with other interested investors, and acknowledged that previous investors wanted a big piece of the company.
"Yes, basically," Busath said. "We're interested in financing, not in selling."
STILL COMMITTED
The county's Regional Transportation Commission remains committed to Iowa Pacific. Bids are due Aug. 9 on $5 million in planned track repairs that should open up the line to greater use, including a possible dinner train.
"They've continued to express their commitment for the operation in Santa Cruz," said Luis Mendez, the Commission's deputy director. "In a way they really couldn't do much yet because we still need to finish -- or even start -- the bridge rehab work."
But for now, several parts of the line are showing signs of neglect. Along the North Coast, waist-high weeds are common, often thick enough to obscure the rails themselves. In April, a small trestle was destroyed by a fire from an undetected homeless camp.
Mendez acknowledged that maintenance has been "minimal," but expects that to pick up once the Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway begins expanded operations.
"They've assured us that when they start more increasing operations, they will invest more in maintenance to make sure the line is operational," Mendez said.
As part of Iowa Pacific's bid the run the Branch Rail Line, it was required to submit confidential financial reports to the Commission. Mendez said there is nothing to indicate the company was less than truthful in those reports.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? New Zealand authorities have triggered a global recall of up to 1,000 tons of dairy products across seven countries after dairy giant Fonterra announced tests had turned up a type of bacteria that could cause botulism.
New Zealand's Ministry of Primary Industries said Saturday that the tainted products include infant formula, sports drinks, protein drinks and other beverages. It said countries affected beside New Zealand include China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.
Fonterra said its customers were urgently checking their supply chains.
One New Zealand company has locked down five batches of infant formula and China is asking importers to immediately recall products.
Fonterra is the world's fourth-largest dairy company, with annual revenues of about $16 billion.
The news comes as a blow to New Zealand's dairy industry, which powers the country's economy. New Zealand exports about 95 percent of its milk.
Consumers in China and elsewhere are willing to pay a big premium for New Zealand infant formula because the country has a clean and healthy reputation. Chinese consumers have a special interest after tainted local milk formula killed six babies in 2008.
The Centers for Disease Control describes botulism as a rare but sometimes fatal paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin.
Fonterra said it has told eight of its customers of the problem, which dates back more than a year, and they were investigating whether any of the affected product is in their supply chains. Fonterra said those companies will initiate any consumer product recalls.
At a news conference Saturday, Fonterra repeatedly refused to divulge the companies, countries or specific products affected. Gary Romano, the managing director of Fonterra's New Zealand milk products, said his company supplies raw materials to the eight companies and it is up to them to inform their consumers of what products might be tainted.
The company did acknowledge its chief executive, Theo Spierings, planned to fly to China Saturday, in part to deal with the fallout from the botulism scare.
New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said Saturday that New Zealand company Nutricia had used some of the tainted product in its Karicare line of formula for infants aged over 6 months. Nutricia had locked down all five batches of infant formula it believed contained the tainted product, the ministry said. But it advised that parents should buy different Nutricia products or alternative brands until it verified the location of all tainted Nutricia products.
China's product quality watchdog issued a statement urging importers of Fonterra dairy products to immediately start recalling the products.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine also told quality agencies around China to step up inspections of milk products from New Zealand.
Romano said the problem was caused by unsterilized pipes at a Waikato factory. He said three batches of whey protein weighing about 42 tons were tainted in May 2012, adding that Fonterra has since cleaned the pipes.
The New Zealand ministry says the tainted product has been mixed with other ingredients to form about 1,000 tons of consumer products worldwide.
The company said in a release it identified a potential quality problem in March when a product tested positive for the bacteria Clostridium. Many strains of the bacteria are harmless, the company said, and product samples were put through intensive testing over the following months. It said that on July 31 it discovered the presence of a strain of the bacteria that can cause botulism.
Romano said Fonterra hasn't received reports of anybody getting sick and added that the problem hasn't affected any fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese or long-lasting heat-treated milk.
New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said it was working with the company to investigate.
Spierings, the chief executive, said in the release that food safety was the company's top priority.
"We are acting quickly," he said. "Our focus is to get information out about potentially affected product as fast as possible so that it can be taken off supermarket shelves and, where it has already been purchased, can be returned."
Earlier this year, Fonterra announced it had discovered trace amounts of the agricultural chemical dicyandiamide in some of its products, prompting a ban on the chemical's use on New Zealand farms.
Rabobank's 2012 Global Dairy Top 20 report ranked Fonterra as the world's fourth-largest dairy company by revenue behind Nestl?, Danone and Lactalis. The company is a cooperative, partially owned by thousands of farmers.
In 2011 the company collected 15.4 billion liters (4.1 billion gallons) of milk in New Zealand, representing about 90 percent of the country's total.
In 2008, six babies in China died and another 300,000 were sickened by infant formula that was tainted with melamine, an industrial chemical added to watered-down milk to fool tests for protein levels. Fonterra at the time owned a minority stake in Sanlu, the now-bankrupt Chinese company at the center of the scandal.

Standing on an outdoor stage for the better part of half an hour has left Rep. Patrick Murphy completely soaked in sweat.
"It's fucking hot out," he says, flapping his arms to dry out his armpits. This may be his only off-script moment on this morning. For Murphy, arguably the most vulnerable House incumbent, one tiny misstep, one off-the-cuff remark could make the difference between winning reelection in 2014 and losing his parking space on Capitol Hill. His job these days is to be the most boring member of Congress.
Just take his sound bite from the day's outdoor press event, hosted by No Labels, a bipartisan group of lawmakers and politicos who call themselves "problem solvers." Handed the microphone after dozens of colleagues lamented partisan gridlock and vowed to put policy ahead of partisanship, Murphy began by stating, "I just want to echo what everyone else out here has been saying."
Boring, sure. But boring like a fox. A fox that doesn't want to cause any trouble. Murphy, the 30-year-old freshman who looks like he could play the nice-but-kinda-shy frat boy in a teen movie, has already proven that sometimes being bland is the most politically savvy way to go. He learned this lesson running against one of the loudest and most visible members of Congress: tea-party icon Allen West. By toeing a moderate line, and making his Florida congressional election a referendum on the bomb-throwing Republican, Murphy eked out a victory in one of the closest races in the country.
Now, he's holding onto just one of nine districts in the country that voted for Mitt Romney in 2012 but elected a Democrat to the House. That means he has to make a lot of swing voters happy?and that means avoiding provocative statements, straddling the line wherever possible, and, of course, raising tons and tons of cash.
Murphy says that as a moderate, pro-business Democrat, he is a perfect representation of the Treasure Coast of eastern Florida. It's a district that features a swath of wealth from West Palm Beach north to Stuart, populated by country-club Republicans concerned both with the economy and conservation of the coastline that makes the area a tourism hotbed. Before Murphy got to Congress, his resume read like the archetypal constituent: vice president of the family construction business, CPA for Deloitte. He even spent six months working to help clean up the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
As a point of pride, Murphy mentions that he votes with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi with close to the same frequency as Republican Rep. Tom Rooney, who used to represent much of the same region before redistricting. While that's an overstatement, it is true that Murphy votes with his party 84 percent of the time, putting him near the bottom on the list of party loyalty (185 out of 200 according to Opencongress.org). "If you take any person with my beliefs, and you pulled me out of the race, it turns out those beliefs poll really well in the district, " Murphy says.
This can be read two ways. His supporters, such as former Rep. Tim Mahoney, who used to have the district, say Murphy has a feel for the values of his constituents. "He's doing a great job, which is not surprising, because his principles line up very well with the area," Mahoney says.
Critics, on the other hand, accuse Murphy of being an unprincipled panderer. As Carl Domino, a Florida Republican who has already entered the race puts it, "He talks about balanced budget and wasteful spending, typical things that Republicans are pushing not just in rhetoric but votes. But on the big votes, his agenda is down the Democratic line."
Domino cites Murphy's recent votes to delay mandates in the federal health care law requiring individuals and large companies to have insurance coverage. He was just one of 35 Democrats to vote for giving businesses a one-year reprieve, and one of just 22 Democrats to vote for a delay of the individual mandate. But if this was supposed to give him credibility among Republican voters, Domino says it's a lame attempt.
"It just doesn't make sense logically," Domino said. "If you're an ardent supporter of the law, if you think it's helpful, as Murphy does, then why do you vote to delay it? He's trying to have it both ways. But what really matters is, he thinks the Affordable Care Act is overall helpful, and I don't."
Katie Prill of the National Republican Congressional Committee says that by not voting against repeal earlier this year, Murphy made it very clear his so-called "conservative values" were a mirage.
"People in his district don't want this law, and the American people are not happy with it," she said. "Instead of standing up for the people in his district, he did the opposite and voted against repeal?. He may want to appear bipartisan, but it's clear where he really stands."
All of it leaves Murphy in sort of a vaporous state, as if turning solid will undoubtedly offend one bloc or another. When asked what legislation, specifically, he'd be willing to lose his seat for, Murphy gave a terrific nonanswer between bites of falafel in a House office building cafeteria.
"Any issue that I think is best for our country or our future, I'll take the vote and not think twice about it," he said. (That isn't to say he isn't without core values. He's pro-abortion rights, pro-LGBT rights, pro-pathway to citizenship.)
Things are so difficult nowadays for a congressman trying to find middle ground that a simple meeting with House Speaker John Boehner quickly escalated into an Internet rumor that Murphy was offering to change parties?a rumor that was swiftly debunked on all sides.
"It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard said about me," says Murphy. (It wasn't all that ridiculous. Murphy was a registered Republican as recently as 2011?and, anyway, it wouldn't be the first time a Southern Democrat has made the jump.) "I met with him, sure. To me, if I got a new job at a company, I'd want to meet my boss. It really says something about the state of our politics that a meeting like that could start a rumor."
Murphy's dilemma is, he can't protest too, too much, lest he be tagged as overly liberal. But he does benefit from his status in another way: As a freshman, he isn't in the thick of major debates in the House over spending and immigration.
Murphy says his impetus to run for Congress came after watching Allen West on TV and feeling compelled to dislodge him from office. But holding onto the seat might be an even bigger accomplishment, because midterm demographics might make it harder for him to win in 2014 than in 2012. Murphy has proven he can raise a great deal of money, but he certainly isn't a fundraising juggernaut like West, who pulled in a staggering $19 million for his 2012 campaign. The general consensus is that Murphy is going to need to raise more than $3 million this time around. Fortunately for him, he's well on track, having raised more than $1 million already this year, most of it coming from outside the district.
As with everything else, Murphy needs to raise a lot of money, while also making it look like he hates doing it. If he shows any kind of pleasure in fundraising, that opens the door to calls of hypocrisy from Republicans, who love to note that he once was against super PACS, calling them "gross," and has since praised their help as "making a big difference" in his campaign.
"I think its terrible the amount of time spent fundraising," Murphy says. "It doesn't do justice for the American people?. The time spent is always a distraction."
Perhaps that's why one of his dozens of requests for contributions this year began with him sounding more apologetic than anything: "This is the last time I will bug you this weekend. Promise."

Russian legislation aimed at battling pirated video content online went into effect Thursday despite complaints by the industry against the alleged crackdown on free Internet.
Branded the "Russian SOPA" after the US anti-piracy initiative, the law makes it easier to block websites that post or link to copyright video content without permission.
Copyright holders would have to provide documents to the Moscow City Court for a court order before contacting Russia's communications watchdog Roskomnadzor to block the offender.
Companies in the industry have lambasted the law, saying the measure makes it possible for anyone to block any website with ease and was put together without taking any suggestions from experts into account.
Roskomnadzor announced the launch of the new register online where copyright holders can file complaints against violating webpages. The register's website (nap.rkn.gov.ru) would not open Thursday morning, possibly due to an overload or an attack.
Google has called the law a "time bomb" for the Internet, and Yandex, the most popular search engine in Russia, said it "is directed against the logic of the Internet," not copyright violators.
"The new law makes it possible to shut down unwanted Internet resources by linking any piracy video to the website and submitting a lawsuit", and the "lack of clear wording" leaves ample room for abuse, VTB Capital said in a note to clients Thursday.
Russian television on Thursday hailed the new law as a measure to fight piracy. "Bad luck for lovers of freebies," Channel One called it on its newscast.
Popular webpages in Russia have launched a formal petition on a government website to push the authorities to reconsider the so-called "Russian SOPA," which gathered over 60,000 signatures by Thursday.
"Vote and share, otherwise tomorrow you will be able to open VKontakte only with the written sanction of a policeman," wrote anti-Kremlin protest leader Alexei Navalny, referring to Russia's most popular social network.
Marginalised by state television, Navalny has built up much of his popularity through the web.
He called on all Internet users to "start a political campaign to defend our right to information and access to the web without censorship."
The website popular with tech professionals Habrahabr.ru called on popular web pages to block themselves in an Internet strike for one day Thursday.
Popular website Lurkmore.to had a black screen up saying "Blocked by Roskomnadzor decision" in a protest.
Russia has been phasing in a number of measures that observers say aim to severely limit freedom of expression on the web.
The Russian parliament plans to expand the piracy law to include music later this year.
A new measure banning the media from using expletives also went into effect in April. In July the online publication Lenta.Ru said that authorities demanded blocking three articles, including an interview with a language professor about the origins of Russian obscene words.
Last year another law went into force that allows the blocking of websites with content that contain child pornography, calls to commit suicide or information on drug use.
That law was also criticised by the industry as containing wording that can be exploited. In November, the authorities briefly put the entire YouTube service onto the blacklist due to what they later said was a "technical mistake."

Deletion of a protein in white blood cells improves their ability to fight the bacteria staphylococcus aureus and possibly other infections in mice with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), according to a National Institutes of Health study. CGD, a genetic disorder also found in people, is marked by recurrent, life-threatening infections. The study's findings appear online in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
A team of researchers from NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) compared three groups: CGD-afflicted mice with the protein Olfm4; CGD-afflicted mice in which the protein had been deleted, and healthy mice in which the protein had been deleted. Olfm4, also known as olfactomedin 4, is sometimes helpful in limiting tissue damage but can also hinder white blood cells' ability to kill bacteria.
The researchers found that the white blood cells in mice without the protein could better withstand staphylococcus aureus infection, a major threat to patients with CGD.
"Although treatment for CGD has greatly improved over the past several years, the disease remains challenging," said Dr. Wenli Liu, staff scientist and lead author. "Our research suggests a novel strategy that might pave the way toward developing new treatments to fight against common and often deadly infections."
The results also suggest another potential method to treat methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other drug-resistant bacteria in patients without CGD, used alongside other therapies. MRSA is a strain of bacteria that has become resistant to antibiotics most often used to treat staph infections. Most commonly contracted in hospitals, MRSA represents a significant public health threat.
"Over the years, MRSA and other bacteria have evolved to be resistant to many antibiotics," said Griffin P. Rodgers, M.D., NIDDK director and study lead. "This study suggests an alternative approach to combat infection by strengthening white blood cell capabilities from within the cells, in addition to resorting to traditional antibiotic treatment."
The research group is now investigating how changing Olfm4 levels in human cells enhances immunity to and from a variety of drug-resistant bacteria. The findings may put researchers closer to developing drug treatment for people, possibly through development of an antibody or small molecule that could inhibit Olfm4 activity.

Canada had its chance to blast away the competition at the second night of the Honda Celebration of Light.
An estimated 300,000 spectators crowded Vancouver?s shoreline Wednesday to get a glimpse of the light show over English Bay, the biggest offshore fireworks competition in the world.
A Calgary-based team, Fireworks Spectaculars, represented Canada with an explosive show to the tune of ?What a Wonderful World,? performed by Celine Dion.?It?s a little nerve wracking to have so many people down here,? said Fireworks Spectaculars president, Brad Dezotell. ?But this isn?t about winning, it?s about putting on a great show.?
The United Kingdom set the bar for the competition with a Bond-themed show last Saturday. A Thai team will close the competition this Saturday.
Spectators were invited to judge the spectacle on an App designed just for the festival. Six other judges will help choose the winning country based on qualities such as colour, originality and correlation of music.
?I got chills twice watching the U.K., they were great,? said judge Bob Kronbauer, 36, shortly before the show. ?They really set the benchmark for the rest of the week.?
It was Kronbauer?s fourth year judging the show, a responsibility that comes with its perks.
?We sit on top of the bathhouse on the beach, it?s definitely the best seat in the house,? he said.
The City of Vancouver tweeted a few hours before the event to remind spectators to leave alcohol at home. ?Open alcohol is prohibited on Vancouver?s beaches, streets and parks,? the tweet said.
Despite the warning, police still dealt with hundreds pour-outs throughout the night along the packed beach. A police officer standing on the corner of Davie and Denman was spotted pouring out a tall can of beer around 7 p.m.
?With the alcohol comes the problems we?re trying to prevent, so we try to stop it before it gets to the beach,? said Const. Brian Montague.
Police also helped reunite a few missing children from their parents. All-in-all, it was a ?pretty good night,? Montague said.
?We?re very happy with the way the night went, everyone is here to enjoy the fireworks,? he said.

The upcoming "Honami" may be Sony's next big leap in smartphone photography, and it has decided to pose for some pictures of its own. As we saw with the previously leaked render, the "Honami" does in fact have the Sony G-Lens labeling on its back. Resolution and focal length are replaced with temporary "X" values, but a photo of the software does show a 20 MP camera setting. There is also a picture of the phone's side, with what appears to be magnetic pins for docking.
A photo that was allegedly taken using a Sony "Honami" prototype was uploaded to Facebook, but thanks to the social network's removal of EXIF data and resizing of the image, it cannot be confirmed.
Additional photos can be found after the break.

To go along with our review of Shield, we're also taking a look at a couple of accessories being released by NVIDIA. Today we're looking at the official custom carrying case as well as the custom lid. The hard case is exactly what you think it would be, along with a nice surprise around back. It's custom molded to fit Shield perfectly, with moldings on the inside for the triggers as well as a small mesh pouch for smaller accessory on the top half. The inside is lined with a soft felt, and we've yet to notice it leaving any marks on Shield. You'll see some nicely done Shield branding on the front, with "NVIDIA green" piping accenting the bottom half of the case. It also has a wrist strap, which is removable if it's not really your thing. I haven't dropped it, but it's built well enough to take a decent impact. I wouldn't go throwing it across the room, though.
The custom lid is something that allows you to personalize Shield more to your liking. Initially they will be available in glossy black and carbon fiber. I don't have the carbon fiber here, but the glossy black is very well done. I've used it almost exclusively, and it's held up well, with no nicks or scratches to be seen anywhere. Whatever NVIDIA used on this particular lid needs to be shared with other manufacturers — it's that durable. They are held on magnetically, and try as I might, I can't make it not line up the way it's supposed to. Initially NVIDIA used a type of clip to hold them on, but switched to magnets based on feedback from industry experts. It works really well, and kudos to them for listening to the feedback and making appropriate changes.
You can pick up the custom carrying case for $39.99 and the lids for $19.99 each from your local Shield retailer. We have a hands-on video and a few pictures after the break.
Have questions about Shield? We'll have all the answers you want in our Ask Me Anything thread.

MINSK (Reuters) - Belarussian potash producer Belaruskali said it was not consulted by Uralkali
Uralkali's decision to dismantle the Belarus Potash Company (BPC), one of the world's two big potash cartels, pummeled the shares of companies around the world that produce potash and heralded a price war for the key crop nutrient.
"Uralkali's decision was made independently, without consultation with BCP's founder - Belaruskali," Belaruskali said in a statement. "Belaruskali continues to cooperate with BCP in terms of export supplies."
The decision to quit the Belarus Potash Company (BPC) may cut the global potash price by 25 percent to below $300 per tonne in the second half of 2013, Uralkali said on Tuesday. Analysts warned that the price drop may put on hold some major projects.
Potash is the main export product for Belarus, Russia's staunchest ally among the former Soviet republics. The Belarus economy is stagnating after a financial crisis in 2011.
"We have not worked out a strategy yet so it is too early to say what it will focus on," Anatoly Makhlai, deputy chief executive with Belaruskali, told Reuters on Wednesday.
Belaruskali was a partner to Uralkali for eight years in BPC, which once held 43 percent of the global potash export market. Uralkali was at one point rumored to be interested in buying a stake in Belaruskali.
Uralkali, which is controlled by tycoon Suleiman Kerimov and his partners, will export potash via its Swiss-based Uralkali Trading. Uralkali shares were down 5 percent by 1350 GMT, underperforming the overall market which was down 0.5 percent.
