ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? As an animal develops from an embryo, its cells take diverse paths, eventually forming different body parts -- muscles, bones, heart. In order for each cell to know what to do during development, it follows a genetic blueprint, which consists of complex webs of interacting genes called gene regulatory networks.
Biologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have spent the last decade or so detailing how these gene networks control development in sea-urchin embryos. Now, for the first time, they have built a computational model of one of these networks.
This model, the scientists say, does a remarkably good job of calculating what these networks do to control the fates of different cells in the early stages of sea-urchin development -- confirming that the interactions among a few dozen genes suffice to tell an embryo how to start the development of different body parts in their respective spatial locations. The model is also a powerful tool for understanding gene regulatory networks in a way not previously possible, allowing scientists to better study the genetic bases of both development and evolution.
"We have never had the opportunity to explore the significance of these networks before," says Eric Davidson, the Norman Chandler Professor of Cell Biology at Caltech. "The results are amazing to us."
The researchers described their computer model in a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that appeared as an advance online publication on August 27.
The model encompasses the gene regulatory network that controls the first 30 hours of the development of endomesoderm cells, which eventually form the embryo's gut, skeleton, muscles, and immune system. This network -- so far the most extensively analyzed developmental gene regulatory network of any animal organism -- consists of about 50 regulatory genes that turn one another on and off.
To create the model, the researchers distilled everything they knew about the network into a series of logical statements that a computer could understand. "We translated all of our biological knowledge into very simple Boolean statements," explains Isabelle Peter, a senior research fellow and the first author of the paper. In other words, the researchers represented the network as a series of if-then statements that determine whether certain genes in different cells are on or off (i.e., if gene A is on, then genes B and C will turn off).
By computing the results of each sequence hour by hour, the model determines when and where in the embryo each gene is on and off. Comparing the computed results with experiments, the researchers found that the model reproduced the data almost exactly. "It works surprisingly well," Peter says.
Some details about the network may still be uncovered, the researchers say, but the fact that the model mirrors a real embryo so well shows that biologists have indeed identified almost all of the genes that are necessary to control these particular developmental processes. The model is accurate enough that the researchers can tweak specific parts -- for example, suppress a particular gene -- and get computed results that match those of previous experiments.
Allowing biologists to do these kinds of virtual experiments is precisely how computer models can be powerful tools, Peter says. Gene regulatory networks are so complex that it is almost impossible for a person to fully understand the role of each gene without the help of a computational model, which can reveal how the networks function in unprecedented detail.
Studying gene regulatory networks with models may also offer new insights into the evolutionary origins of species. By comparing the gene regulatory networks of different species, biologists can probe how they branched off from common ancestors at the genetic level.
So far, the researchers have only modeled one gene regulatory network, but their goal is to model the networks responsible for every part of a sea-urchin embryo, to build a model that covers not just the first 30 hours of a sea urchin's life but its entire embryonic development. Now that this modeling approach has been proven effective, Davidson says, creating a complete model is just a matter of time, effort, and resources.
The title of the PNAS paper is "Predictive computation of genomic logic processing functions in embryonic development." In addition to Peter and Davidson, the other author on the PNAS paper is Emmanuel Faure, a former Caltech postdoctoral scholar who is now at the ?cole Polytechnique in France. This work was supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Americans spent at the fastest pace in five months in July after earning a little more. The increase in income and consumer spending could help boost an economy mired in subpar growth.
Consumer spending rose 0.4 percent in July from June, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That followed no change in June and a slight decline in May.
Income grew 0.3 percent, matching the gains from May and June. Americans also earned 0.3 percent more after paying taxes.
The savings rate after taxes dipped to 4.2 percent in July. That's down slightly from 4.3 percent in June, the highest in a year.
Consumer spending is closely watched because it accounts for 70 percent of economic activity.
Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said that the rise in spending showed "there is still life in American consumers." But he cautioned that higher gasoline prices and a decline in consumer confidence in August could dampen spending in coming months.
Hiring picked up in July and could see further modest gains in August. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits was unchanged last week at a seasonally adjusted 374,000, the Labor Department said in a separate report Thursday.
Applications are a measure of the pace of layoffs. They have risen slightly over the past three weeks but remain lower than they were in the spring, when hiring nearly stalled. When applications fall consistently below 375,000, it generally suggests that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.
The government releases the August jobs report on Sept. 7. Analysts expect it to say the economy added 118,000 jobs in August and that the unemployment rate held at 8.3 percent, according to FactSet.
Economists say stronger growth is needed to create more jobs and lower unemployment.
Reports released Thursday from a range of retailers show Americans kept spending in August despite the increase in gas prices.
Costco Wholesale Corp.'s revenue from stores open at least a year climbed 6 percent. And Target Corp. reported a 4.2 percent increase in revenue at stores opened at least a year. The strong sales reports come two days after a private research firm said consumer confidence in August fell to its lowest level since November 2011.
The economy grew at a tepid annual rate of 1.7 percent in the April-June quarter, the government said Wednesday. Many economists expect growth will hover around 2 percent in the second half of the year. Growth at that level is far below what is needed to rapidly lower the unemployment rate.
Slow growth could prompt the Federal Reserve to take further steps to boost the economy when policymakers meet again on Sept. 12-13. In late July, Fed policymakers spoke with increased urgency about the need to provide more help for a weak U.S. economy.
Chairman Ben Bernanke could offer some clues Friday to what the Fed might announce when he speaks at a Fed conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Some suspect the Fed will wait to see how the economy performed in August, especially after July's data was better than expected.
Inflation has been tame, which could provide the Fed more leeway to act.
Consumers paid no more their purchases in July than June, the report showed. Excluding food and energy, prices over the past year are up just 1.6 percent, well below the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target for inflation.
Employers created 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. Consumers stepped up retail spending, factories produced more goods and the housing recovery continued with increases in both new and previously occupied homes.
In its latest survey of business conditions around the country, the Federal Reserve reported Wednesday that the U.S. economy grew moderately in July and early August with stronger retail sales helping to offset weakness in manufacturing.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's official manufacturing managers' index (PMI) may have eased to a 9-month low of 50 in August, supporting the case for fresh easing measures by the central bank as the world's second-largest economy struggles against stiff global headwinds.
Having already cut interest rates in June and July, the central bank has been injecting cash into money markets to ease credit conditions further as the economy struggles to regather momentum after registering a slowdown for a sixth straight quarter in April-June.
A PMI reading below 50 suggests factory activity contracted, while a number above 50 points to expansion.
A flash PMI published last week by HSBC showed China's factories contracted in August, the most in nine months on falling export orders and rising inventories, signaling fresh policy action may be needed to support growth.
"It seems that August was not the bottom for the manufacturing sector. Exports have been weakening sharply entering the third quarter," said Wei Yao, China economist at Societe Generale in Hong Kong.
"This may call for faster implementation of policy easing measures," she added.
China's policymakers are wary of any action that could reignite property prices and inflation risks. But, many analysts believe that given the dismal state of export markets, the central bank could opt to lower banks' required reserves further, and may cut interest rates again.
The official PMI has generally painted a rosier picture of the factory sector than the HSBC PMI as the official survey focuses on big, state-owned firms, while the HSBC PMI targets smaller, private firms that have limited access to bank loans.
There are also differing approaches to seasonal adjustment between the two surveys.
A raft of weaker-than-expected economic data for July, including factory output growth that slowed to its weakest level in more than three years, has cooled market expectations for a quick turnaround in the economy.
China's annual economic growth could pick up to 7.9 percent in the third quarter from a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter in response to government policy fine-tuning, according to a Reuters poll in July.
The official PMI survey will be released on Saturday, at 0100 GMT, ahead of the final HSBC reading due to be published on September 3.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The average gas mileage of new cars and trucks will have to nearly double by 2025 under regulations that were finalized Tuesday by the Obama administration.
The new rules would require the fleet of new cars and trucks to average 54.5 miles per gallon in 13 years, up from 28.6 mpg at the end of last year.
The regulations will change the cars and trucks in U.S. showrooms and drive automakers to introduce new technology to make vehicles cleaner and more efficient.
The administration says the regulations will save families more than $1.7 trillion in fuel costs and bring an average savings of $8,000 over the lifetime of a new vehicle sold in 2025. The standards also will halve the greenhouse gas pollution coming from cars and light truck tailpipes by 2025, the White House said in a statement.
President Barack Obama said in a statement that the new fuel standards "represent the single most important step" his administration has taken to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. "This historic agreement builds on the progress we've already made to save families money at the pump and cut our oil consumption," he said.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opposed the standards, and his campaign on Tuesday called them extreme and said they would drive up the price of new cars. Any savings at the pump would be wiped out by rising costs of cars, the campaign said.
By 2025, some bigger models may disappear, and dealers could offer more efficient gas-electric hybrids, natural gas vehicles and electric cars. There also will be smaller motors, lighter bodies and more devices to save fuel, such as circuits that temporarily shut off engines at traffic lights. The changes will raise new car prices, but the government says that will be more than offset by savings at the pump.
The gas mileage requirements will be phased in gradually and get tougher starting in 2017. They build on a 2009 deal between the Obama administration and automakers that committed cars and trucks to average 35.5 mpg by model year 2016.
In the arcane world of government regulations, the rules don't mean that cars and trucks will average 54.5 mpg in 13 years. It's actually closer to 40 mpg in real-world driving.
Under the complex regulations, dubbed "Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE," automakers can have lower mileage by using credits for selling natural gas and electric vehicles, changing air conditioning fluid to one that pollutes less, and even for placing louvers on car grilles to improve aerodynamics. They won't have to improve pickup truck mileage much for the first few years, but big improvements will come later, after 2020.
Still, automakers have been adding technology to boost gas mileage, mainly because people want to spend less on gasoline, which averaged about $3.75 per gallon this week. The research firm J.D. Power and Associates says that fuel economy is the top factor people consider when buying a car in the U.S.
CAFE requirements were first imposed in the 1970s in response to foreign oil embargoes, and the administration says this is the first update in decades.

Ann Romney - his sweetheart, his best friend, and his most important political adviser - began trying to showcase a softer image of her husband. LINK
The Washington Post's Dan Balz: " Chris Christie rouses RNC convention" Mitt Romney may be the Republican Party's presidential nominee and Paul Ryan the ?running mate, but Chris Christie takes a back seat to no one in the GOP. The New Jersey governor was once a possible rival to Romney. Although he insisted that he didn't think he was ready to be president, Christie had to keep swatting away speculation and encouragement to jump into the race at a time when the party was still learning to love Romney. LINK
Politico's Alexander Burns: " GOP vows to "Save America," boost Mitt" The Republican Party unveiled Mitt Romney as its general-election candidate Tuesday night, seeking to reintroduce him to the electorate as a champion of political reform and conservative business values who would turn back the anti-capitalist policies of the Obama administration. In a lineup of speeches capped off by Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Republicans tackled the dual challenges that define Romney's general-election fight: convincing the American people that he has a plan for economic recovery and rebutting a summer's worth of harsh attacks from the Obama campaign. LINK
Bloomberg's Catherine Dodge and Lisa Lerer: " GOP Nominates Romney As Wife Downplays Storybook Marriage" With New Jersey's delegate vote count tonight, Mitt Romney surpassed the 1,144 votes he needed to become the 2012 Republican Party's presidential nominee. The working relationship between school staff and parents of children with autism spectrum disorders is critical to the children?s success in school and can be a source of tremendous stress at the beginning of the school year when parents are not familiar with the school staff.
Cathy Pratt, director of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University, provided numerous tips?earlier this summer geared toward helping children with autism begin their school year well and also for helping teachers and school staff understand the children?s needs.
Her tips included a form that parents can fill out detailing specific information about learning styles, communication systems, medical issues, behavior supports and other topics.?Pratt encourages parents to share the information with relevant staff including cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers, the school secretary, the school nurse, and administrators.
This week I learned of another useful resource for school staff and anyone who cares for or knows someone with autism spectrum disorders ?? this includes caregivers, first responders and medical providers.? The HANDS in Autism Interdisciplinary Training and Resource Center is distributing a DVD titled ?What Is Autism??
The free 23-minute video features several individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, portraying their stories and successes due in large part to the perseverance, planning and support of their families and caregivers.

PANAMA CITY ? A local woman and mother of two is preparing to receive a bone marrow transplant just three months after being diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia.
Three months ago Kristy Nolan went to a doctor?s visit for a typical check-up with no idea that she was actually facing a life-threatening disease.
?I thought I had a severe case of strep throat, but after he ran the blood work, he came back and told me I had leukemia,? Nolan said. ?They put me in an ambulance and took me to Shands Hospital in Gainesville.?
Nolan, 29, a graduate of Bay High School, was diagnosed with a form of leukemia called acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).
According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) website, AML is a cancer of the bone marrow and the blood and it affects mostly cells that aren?t fully developed. These cells can?t carry out their normal functions. That?s one reason why it?s important to get care and treatment as soon as possible, the website states.
Beatrice Abetti, information specialist at LLS, said AML is not typically diagnosed in young adults.
?Its one of the two acute leukemias that strikes primarily older adults,? Abetti said. ?AML represents a little less than 30 percent of leukemia patients.?
Nolan spent five weeks at Shands, but when she returned home she still had leukemia and was not in remission.
After the first time she was admitted, a daily fight with cancer ensued.
?I had to get more chemo and stronger chemo,? she said. ?I lost my hair. I?ve had to move in with family, and I lost my job,? Nolan said.
Previously, Nolan had worked as a property manager at Sun Bird Condos for Oasis Resorts.
Nolan was released from Shands on July 30. The bone marrow transplant is the thing that will keep her in remission for the longest time, she said.
From the time she was diagnosed, she got busy learning about her disease and searching for a donor.
?I began to post on social media websites and on Bethematch.org,? Nolan said.
Two weeks ago, Bethematch.org found a 100 percent perfect match for Nolan.
However, Nolan learned Thursday that the matching donor decided to no longer make the donation.
?My transplant has been pushed back to Oct. 5,? Nolan said. ?This is the second donor to back out. No reason given.??
Depending on the patient and possible complications, it may take about a year for her to fully recover, officials from LLS said.
A small group of Nolan?s friends and family members started a foundation called Kristy Nolan Leukemia Foundation to educate others about her form of leukemia and to raise money to help offset the impact of her illness on her finances, the group said. ?
Medicaid covers her medical bills, including her first medical bill of more than $400,000, she said. But being unable to work has left her in need of financial help for living expenses.
The foundation wants to help her with those expenses, as well as to raise awareness of AML support, the group said.
?This is what she wants? Michelle Gautreaux, one of the founders of the foundation said. ?Kristy is very fun, loving, and giving, and a sweet and wonderful mom and friend.?
Geatreaux met Nolan through mutual friends. They both have two children who would go on play-dates together, she added.
The foundation is holding its first event called Kristy Nolan Leukemia Foundation 5k Fun Run/Walk and Silent Auction on Saturday at 8 a.m. at Frank Brown Park.
Items from Elevation Salon, Bone Fish Grill and Dance Life Studio will be auctioned, Geatreaux added. An after party will be held at Hofsbrau at Pier Park.

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened on Friday as its lashing rains took aim at flood-prone Haiti, but it was not expected to become a hurricane until it barreled into the Gulf of Mexico early next week.
On its current path, forecasters said Isaac would hit Cuba and the southern tip of Florida before making landfall anywhere from the Florida Panhandle in the northwestern part of the state to Alabama and as far west as New Orleans.
Forecasters put the entire coast of south Florida under tropical storm watch as of 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) on Friday.
But the biggest immediate concern was heavily deforested Haiti, where the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the full force of the storm was expected to be felt by Friday evening.
Isaac comes as Republicans gather in Tampa, on Florida's central Gulf coast, for Monday's start of their national convention ahead of the November presidential election.
The convention is still due to proceed as planned but Gulf of Mexico operators began shutting down offshore oil and gas rigs on Friday ahead of the storm.
On Friday afternoon torrential rains began falling on the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
Life-threatening flash-floods and mudslides, which are common in Haiti, could add to the misery of about 350,000 people still living in tent cities and camps after the January 2010 earthquake that killed more than 250,000 people.
The NHC said Isaac was centered about 100 milessouth-southeast of the seaside Haitian capital Port-au-Prince late Friday afternoon, packing top sustained winds of 65 miles per hour.
The storm was moving northwest at 16 mph and it was expected to dump between 8 and 12 inches of rain over parts of Haiti, with total accumulations of up to 20 inches in some areas.
The storm prompted Haitian President Michel Martelly to announce on Thursday night that he was cancelling a planned trip to Japan.
"I known your worries," Martelly said in an address to the nation. "I also know we're a strong people."
About 3,000 volunteers from the government's Civil Protection office have been dispatched across Haiti, to warn people about flood and landslide risks, and about 1,250 shelters -- schools, churches or other community buildings -- have opened their doors to house people seeking refuge from the storm.
But Red Cross officials said the number of shelters could be grossly inadequate and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe acknowledged Haiti had "limited means" to ensure public safety.
Red Cross and International Organization for Migration representatives joined Martelly and other government officials in trying to evacuate 8,000 people, including 2,500 sick and disabled, from 18 tent camps in low-lying coastal areas of Port-au-Prince on Friday.
"NOTHING WE CAN DO"
But Bradley Mellicker, head of disaster management for the IOM, said many people refused to abandon their makeshift homes, apparently due to fears of theft.
"There's a lot of people who are resisting because they are scared of losing what little they have now," Mellicker said.
Many Haitians, most of whom scrape by on less than $1 per day, consider disaster an inevitable part of life in the poorest country in the Americas.
"We live under tents. If there's too much rain and wind, water comes in. There's nothing we can do," said Nicholas Absolouis, an unemployed 34-year-old mechanic at one camp for homeless people on the northern edge of the chaotic capital.
"If he's coming, he's already on the way," added Juliette Jean-Baptiste, 26, another resident of the camp. "Our tents leak already."
"We're not worried," said Olivier Oge, who was playing dominoes with friends as wind kicked up the tarp over their heads in Tapis Rouge, a sprawling camp for quake survivors near a ravine on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.
When Isaac comes, "we'll still be playing until the pieces fly away," he said.
"The next 24 hours will be critical for the population of Haiti," said France Hurtubise of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Haiti. "There are still too many people living in the camps. There's a good chance that those might be destroyed with the passage of the cyclone."
Flooding could also help rekindle a cholera epidemic in Haiti, which has killed more than 7,500 people since the disease first appeared in October 2010, foreign aid workers said.
Isaac has drawn especially close scrutiny because of the Republican Party's convention, a four-day meeting during which former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will receive the party's presidential nomination.
Party officials insist the convention will go ahead, even if they have to alter the schedule. But NHC meteorologist Rick Danielson said Tampa could potentially be hit by coastal flooding and driving winds or rain.
"There is still a full range of possible impacts on Tampa at this point," he said.
The NHC is no longer forecasting Isaac to rev up to hurricane force until Monday night or early Tuesday, long after it crosses Haiti and Cuba.
Danielson said it was very hard to project intensity before Isaac passes over mountainous Cuba on Saturday and Sunday and enters the Florida Straits. But the Florida Keys, the island chain off the southernmost part of the state, were definitely in harm's way.
Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane since 2005, and forecasts showed Isaac was not expected to strengthen beyond weak Category 1, with top sustained wind speeds of about 85 mph.

The Co-operative Group says it is succeeding in building a ?compelling? online retail presence for its electricals and pharmacy businesses.
The internet strategy is part of a push by the group, which this week announced its half-year results, to improve customer access to its broad range of services, which also extend to funerals, food, cars, banking and an expanding legal services business.
In its half-year results the company said: ?We are building a compelling co-operative online retailing presence, which builds on our strengths of great customer service, value for money and trust within our existing electrical and pharmacy online businesses.?
It also said it was continuing to work on Project Unity in order to ?realise the full potential of our vast and diverse customer base and our strong family of businesses, in the interests of our customers and members.?
In addition to selling pharmacy and electricals products online, the company is also taking both banking and electricals services into its food stores, with a national roll out following pilots. Legal services will be extended through its bank branches, while its banking services, which already include online and mobile banking, will extend to mobile and contactless payments. The Co-op said it would spend ?2bn in the next three years across its businesses on people, processes and systems.
Chief executive Peter Marks said such moves would help prepare it for a future recovery in the economy. ?The environment is tough and we see no let-up in that,? he said. ?But we believe that the work we have done over the past five years to scale up in our core businesses means we are better placed than ever before to thrive when the economic upturn does come.?
In the six months to June 30, Co-operative Group gross sales, including VAT, rose to ?6.56bn from ??6.54bn last time. But underlying operating profit fell to ?174m from ?264m last time, while debt increased to ?1.5bn from ?1.4bn.
Sales in the company?s food division fell by 2.2% overall, and 1.2% on a like-for-like basis. Like-for-like sales rose by 1.4% in its convenience stores. The company said it would open 80 new stores this year and was rolling out its SMART stock management system to improve product availability.
But its specialist businesses, which include the electricals and pharmacy online businesses, saw revenue grow by 1.5% to ?777.1m and underlying operating profit grow by 19.3% to ?62.0m.
Marks said: ?It is in times like these when our ownership model as a mutual really comes into its own. We have been able to continue to invest for the long-term development of all our businesses and to protect our customers even though we, like all businesses, have felt the impact of the tough headwinds of the unrelenting consumer downturn.
?A year ago I warned that we were operating in the worst conditions that I have seen in more than 40 years in business. The results we are announcing today show the full impact of that with the profitability of our two biggest businesses affected. The impact has been felt most keenly in our bank which has been hit by increased impairments on lending to corporate customers and the on-going low-interest-rate environment. On a positive note however, our specialist businesses division continues to perform well and saw a strong increase in profitability in the first half.
?None of this was unexpected and we had planned for this outcome, so were well prepared. And the current environment only highlights again the strength of our ownership model that lets us plan for the longer term by continuing to invest to ensure our businesses maintain momentum and our customers are always offered value with values.
?Looking ahead, we remain confident and we expect an improvement in sales and profit in the second half.?
Our view: With the Co-op now offering online and mobile banking, pharmacy and electrical sales, the largest missing piece of the connected jigsaw would seem to be the food division. Some 350 of the Co-op?s larger stores do offer home delivery for goods bought in store. With Iceland now planning a return to ecommerce sales as more of its customers now have internet access, we?ll wait with interest to see if (or, indeed, when) the UK?s fifth largest food retailer will join the online grocery revolution.

For hundreds of thousands of Americans, the first sign of heart disease is when their heart stops.
It's a situation that has cardiologists constantly searching for better ways to detect heart problems sooner. On Tuesday, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested that a test using a CT scan could lead to answers for many of the 33.5 million Americans deemed to be at intermediate risk of heart problems.
Yet the scan is not without its drawbacks -- a fact that has some doctors skeptical as to whether this test should be offered more widely.
The test -- known as a coronary artery calcium score, or CAC -- is found by evaluating the amount of calcium in blood vessels around the heart. Doctors accomplish through a CT scan of the chest.
In the new study, a team led by Dr. Joseph Yeboah, assistant professor of internal medicine-cardiology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, found that this test was the most effective of the six different methods to determine someone's risk of future heart problems if they happened to be classified as having an "intermediate" risk of heart disease.
Doctors can tell patients whether they are at high, low or intermediate risk of developing heart disease by using what is known as the Framingham score -- a tool that looks at age, cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking history and gender. A high-risk patient will likely be treated more aggressively with blood pressure and cholesterol medications than their low-risk counterparts.
Rosie O'Donnell Made a Mistake After Heart Attack Watch VideoBut while this approach works well when it comes to high or low risk patients, for the 16 percent of Americans in the intermediate risk category the lines are fuzzier as to when they should start taking these medications.
While the CAC is not currently in wide use, the study authors argue that expanding its use could help guide treatment for these millions of patients.
"The present study provides additional support for the use of CAC as a tool for refining cardiovascular risk prediction in individuals classified as intermediate risk by the [Framingham risk score]," the study authors write.
Specifically, the coronary artery calcium score would have accurately "reclassified" 25 percent of individuals from intermediate to high risk, and another 40 percent to low risk. This means more than half of the people previously labeled ambiguously as having intermediate risk would now be considered to be at either high or low risk, which would ideally lead to more appropriate care.
The implications of such an adjustment would be considerable. Heart disease remains the leading cause of deaths worldwide. Blockage of the arteries of the heart, or coronary heart disease, leads to heart attacks -- a condition that accounted for 1 out of 6 American deaths in 2008, according to the American Heart Association.
"While no one wants to be a statistic, the stark reality is that coronary disease is a leading killer," said Dr. Subha V. Raman, director of the division of cardiovascular medicine at The Ohio State University. "Over half a million Americans find out each year that they have [coronary heart disease] while in the throes of a sudden cardiac death event,"
On the other side of the coin are the out-of-pocket expenses and the increased radiation exposure that this test entails. Previous studies show that radiation from CT scans has been linked to cancers.
Some doctors say the downsides of this test outweigh these benefits.
"I strongly disagree with the authors' conclusions," said Dr. Steven Nissen, chairman of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. "CAC scoring is a poor bargain with high costs and real harms."
