PFT: Brady inspires man to give kidney to stranger

The father of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady recently made a stir by suggesting that Brady Sr. would be be ?very hesitant? to let his son play football if he were a young boy in 2012.

Generating far less attention was Brady Sr.?s concession that, if Brady Jr. were 14 now, ?and he really wanted to play,? Brady Sr. would still let him.

Brady Jr. has now chimed in on the situation, in comments to our friend and colleague (I need to say nice things so he keeps sending in the links) Tom Curran of CSN New England.

?Everybody has a different take,? Brady said.? ?My dad is always happy to share his opinion with anybody that will ask, often contrary to my own beliefs.?

Brady then explained that, like remarks from earlier in the month made by Kurt Warner, Tom Brady Sr. spoke form the perspective? of basic parental concern.

?He?s always a concerned parent and we as parents are always concerned about our kids,? Brady said.? ?You never want to see your kid fall down and bump his elbow.? You?re always concerned when things are out of your control as a parent.

?But there?s no job I?d rather have in the world.? I?m so fortunate to be in a job that?s so fun for me every day.? What football has taught me in the grand scheme of my life about being a part of a team and working with people and hard work, discipline and mental toughness ? all those things that serve me in life.? The lessons far outweigh anything I?ve experienced in terms of injuries.?

That?s the balance every parent and player eventually has to strike.? As long as the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks, kids will want to play football.? And their parents in all likelihood will let them.

?[W]e all understand the risks and we have to do our best,? Brady said.? ?I love playing this sport.? It will be hard to give it up.?

Curran also points out something that needs to be remembered as the ?should kids play football?? debate continues.? The game is safer at every level than it ever has been, and it will only get safer.

Will there still be risks?? Sure.? But unless we want our children?s only activity to consist of playing Trivial Pursuit from the wrong side of a plastic bubble, there will always be risks.

State of the Automotive Industry's Marketing Efforts - Mongoose Metrics

In our recent research data series, The State of Automotive Marketing, we set out to evaluate and address some of the challenges that automotive dealers face today in connecting with customers and potential customers via social media. With the results from this series our goal is to help automotive marketers better understand and leverage best practices as part of the overall marketing mix. We want you to have the confidence when forming your plan and justifying marketing spend.

How did we retrieve the raw data?

Using Jigsaw.com?s API we were able to retrieve the company information of 17,669 automotive dealerships. ?We then crawled the domains of each dealership website and downloaded the homepage source code. By downloading all source code we were able to analyze which social media platforms were the preferred choice and how they are being utilized. Taking it one step further: With our retrieved data we were able to use Facebook?s Open Graph API and Twitter?s FollowerWonk to measure dealership engagement ratios.

What did we find in our research?

Facebook has the largest presence of the auto industry with 6,628 dealers (38%)
- Marketing among dealers is concentrated on the east coast, Midwest and west coast
- Most dealers have between 5-222 fans
- Most dealers have < 0.58% engagement
Twitter has the second-largest presence of auto dealers with 4,164 (24%)
- Twitter marketing is also concentrated on the East coast, Midwest and West coast
- The average dealership Twitter account had between 3-144 followers
- Over time, the average follower count tends to stagnate
YouTube showed the third largest presence with 4,066 (23%)
In terms of Google+, 1,344 (8%) of dealers have a Google+ page.
Only 270 (2%) of dealerships had a LinkedIn company page.
Facebook and Twitter are commonly used together with 3,940 (22%) of dealers utilizing both networks to market.

While many dealerships are taking advantage of various social media platforms the question becomes; Are marketing efforts effective and what is the process for measuring effectiveness? In our upcoming blog post we will review engagement ratios in comparison to ?like? or ?follower? counts.

Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300

Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300 ($180, list) is currently the only device that can take advantage of the higher speeds of 802.11ac. Of course, 802.11ac has yet to be ratified so the device is still in draft 802.11ac, which the device's packaging acknowledges. The media bridge is meant to be a companion device to the Buffalo AirStation AC1300/N900 Gigabit Dual Band WZR-D1800H Router, the company's first draft 802.11ac router.

A media bridge makes devices that are wired to it accessible wirelessly; typically you'd use it for hardware such as NAS devices, gaming consoles, and set-top boxes. While you can't wire your iPad or notebook to the media bridge and expect 1300 Mbps wireless performance if you also deploy Buffalo's 11ac router, the media bridge does offer a performance boost when used in conjunction with the D1800H. Performance gains are more noticeable when doing throughput-demanding tasks such as streaming high-definition video or copying large files across the network.

Although the biggest advantages of the device come when pairing it with the D1800H router, you can use it to connect to any AOSS or WPS enabled router. It's a well-made device for expanding wireless connectivity to wired devices, and if you are looking to leverage the performance boosts of Buffalo's 11ac router to the max right now, than the media bridge is a needed addition since there are no 11ac adapters currently available.

Specs and Setup
The D1300 is dual-band, supporting up to 1300 Mbps on the 5-GHz band and 450 Mbps on 2.4-GHz. The device is identical in design to the D1800H except the front panel has less LEDs. On the front is an AOSS button (AOSS is Buffalo's proprietary WPS "Wireless Protected Setup). When pushed, the media bridge syncs up with the D1800H and joins the wireless network.

The rear panel features four Gigabit Ethernet ports, a button to enable or disable 5-GHz, and a power on/off button.

The media bridge offers absolutely simple setup. There's no software or drivers to install. With the D1800H powered up and configured, I plugged in the media bridge and powered it on. To pair the router and bridge together is only a matter of pressing the AOSS button on the bridge and then the AOSS button on the D1800H. Pairing is complete when the wireless LED on both devices stop blinking. It's a solid setup process.

Performance
The media bridge does exactly what it's supposed to do; it allows wired devices to be accessed from a wireless network. I did want to see if I got any performance boost connecting a NAS to the bridge and wirelessly uploading a large file. I did. I connected Synology's DS712+ router to one of the LAN ports on the bridge and upload a 1.5GB file wirelessly. Connected to the bridge, my upload was about two minutes faster than with the NAS only connected to a router.

That may not sound like a lot, but the performance gain could make for better video streaming and gaming.

There's a management interface you can access via a browser on the device. It provides some network setting control, but there isn't a heck of a lot to manage with a bridge and most users will never have to access the interface.

A Bridge to 802.11ac
At the moment, the D1300 is the only way to take advantage of 802.11ac and that only in unison with Buffalo's D1800H 11ac router. On its own, it's an excellent media bridge and can work with non-Buffalo WPS?supported devices. With setup only requiring a push of a button, it's a four star earner for networking hardware. My single criticism is that unless you purchase the D1800H and want to get the gains of 11ac, the D1300 is pricey for a dual-band media bridge, when perfectly good non 802.11ac media bridges are available for $120 or less.?

College preperation event at Albany Medical College

ALBANY -Parents of students in grades 7 through 12 are invited to a free event designed to help them prepare their children to succeed in high school and to prepare both parents and teens for college and the future.

Some of the region?s leading educators and career development and health professionals will discuss topics including careers of the future, getting the most out of the high school years, how adolescent health can affect academic achievement, and financial aid and scholarships.

The symposium is sponsored by Albany Medical College?s Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) in celebration of the 25th anniversary of STEP in New York State. STEP prepares historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged elementary and secondary school students for college and professional careers in the scientific, technical, health-related or other licensed professions. Albany Medical College?s STEP Program, created 20 years ago, is one of only five STEP Programs in the Capital Region.

The event will be held at Albany Medical College on Saturday, June 2, from 9:30-3p.

Glamour: Is there much competition in your world??Leighton:??I will not lie, yes there is competition.?My character on Gossip Girl is an example, always try to manipulate and hurt people.?Knowing that there are other realities is refreshing.?

G:?When was the last time you felt like a princess??I guess the hotel suites and not impact you.?Leighton:??Of course!?I love hotels.?I was recently in London with Vera Wang for the launch of a perfume and I felt so glamorous!?She is so sophisticated, we met many publishers of magazines and went to Harrod?s, everything continues to impress me. But I can also travel by tourists and stay in a motel if needed.?

G:?Are your beauty tips??Leighton:??I?m the worst for this (laughs). I always say less is more when it comes to make up and hair. but I do believe that if you are healthy you will always look better.?Sure, I say this after having eaten a mac & cheese, but I try to take vitamins, eat vegetables and salads, fresh juices and ready to do yoga.??

G:?Besides acting, what do you like??Leighton:?I love music, writing and being with my family.?I love traveling.?I travel a lot, but almost always for work. I am thrilled vacation, all I want to do is eat, sleep and swim all the time with my family in Florida.

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Sweden's Loreen won the Eurovision Song Contest in Azerbaijan on Sunday before an international TV audience of 100 million, days after angering Azeri authorities by meeting rights activists critical of the host country's human rights record.

Opposition groups have used the Eurovision spotlight, intended by Azerbaijan to promote the country as a destination for tourism and business, to demand democracy and the resignation of the government. Dozens of peaceful protesters have been arrested this month in the Caspian coastal capital, Baku. Activists say some buildings in the center of the city were torn down to make way for the Eurovision arena and residents were forcibly evicted without proper compensation.

The 28-year-old pop singer won with the song "Euphoria" in the annual competition of 42 countries, delighting viewers and the contest's professional judges and dancing barefoot as she sang.

"This is about all of us! Thank you so very much!" Loreen told a news conference.

She said the first to congratulate her were her family and her crew. Her mother joined her briefly at the news conference.

"Time has stopped," Loreen said about her feelings after she was announced as winner.

Russia's entry, rural folk group Buranovskiye Babushki (Grannies from Buranovo) came in second and Serbia's Zeljko Joksimovic was third in the 57th year of a contest famous for heavy-duty kitsch.

The competition took place in a specially built "Crystal Hall" on the shores of the Caspian.

Loreen has met with activists who accuse the government of forcing people from their homes for the building of the hall, an accusation Baku denies. Azeri authorities accused her of making political statements that had no place at a musical event.

'Historical and magical'

Hundreds of people started pouring into a roundabout in central Stockholm, dancing in a fountain, honking horns and waving flags and playing the winning song.

"This is historical and magical! I think I'm going to die. This is the best thing that has happened to Sweden in 13 years!" said 20-year-old Tanja Tuuliainen from Stockholm, wearing a Swedish flag and drinking a bottle of champagne with her girlfriends on the edge of a fountain in downtown Stockholm.

Sweden's entry last won the Eurovision competition in 1999.

Celebrants were bathing in their underwear in the fountain, where Swedes traditionally celebrate major sporting event wins.

Hundreds were singing "We're going up up up up up!!!", repeating a line from Loreen's song.

The Eurovision Song Contest has been a launching pad for international careers. Swedish pop group Abba became famous after winning in 1974 with "Waterloo" and Canada's Celine Dion took top honors in 1988 for Switzerland.

To promote talent over politically and geographically motivated bloc voting, professional judges now account for 50 percent of a performer's score.

The other half comes from telephone and SMS votes received by each contestant, with fans unable to vote for their own country's entry.

As winner, Sweden will host the next Eurovision contest.

Gas prices lower on Memorial Day: How much will you save?

Gas prices have fallen an average 27 cents a gallon since April and are 12 cents lower than last Memorial Day. With gas prices down, experts predict more Memorial Day travel, dining, and shopping.

Memorial Day kicks off the summer travel season, and since pump?prices?never reached $4 or $5 a gallon ($1.05 to $1.32 a liter), as feared, economists says travelers are likely to dine out or shop more once they pull off the road.

About 30.7 million Americans will drive more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) for Memorial Day trips, according to auto club AAA. That's 400,000 more than last year, a jump AAA attributes to improvement in the economy and consumer attitudes. The number of holiday travelers grows to 34.8 million when you include planes, trains and other means of transportation.

A drop in?gas?prices?encouraged Americans to spend more at restaurants and bars in April. And that trend could continue over the holiday. Pump?prices?are down 27 cents a gallon since their peak in early April, to $3.67 a gallon (nearly $1 a liter), where they're likely to stay this weekend, predicts Tom Kloza, the chief oil analyst at the Oil?Price?Information Service. That's 12 cents cheaper than last year. Over the weekend, U.S. drivers will burn about 1.2 billion gallons of gasoline ? and spend $144 million less on?gas?than last year.

Restaurants, movie theaters and retailers hope some of that savings goes to them. Just last month, AAA and IHS Global Insight, the firm that analyzed the AAA study, were expecting travelers to spend less on entertainment, dining and shopping on vacation and devote more time to family and friends. .

Now, travelers might take longer trips or spend more on other things "because there's more money left in their pocket," says John Larson, vice president for IHS.

Still, most people need to restrict their travel budgets. For many, incomes are growing slightly if at all. Household debt remains high. And although the increase in the stock market over the past year has helped some regain wealth lost in the recession, there is still a ways to go. A recent report from the Federal Reserve shows that American household wealth would have to rise by 13 percent to return to pre-recession levels.

Two major exhibits of ancient artifacts relating to the best-known figures from ancient Egypt, King Tut and Cleopatra, are in the last stages of their U.S. tours ? and their departure could signal the end of an era.

"Cleopatra: The Exhibition" opened at the California Science Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday, while "Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs" began its run at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle today. By the end of next year, the more than 250 artifacts from the two exhibitions will be back in Egypt, possibly for good.

The return to Egypt marks the end of a Tut-centric "Comeback Tour" that began back in 2005 and sparked the kind of enthusiasm that was seen back in the 1970s, during an earlier Tut exhibit. Like that 1976-1979 "Treasures of Tutankhamun" show, millions have turned out to see the glittering gold and the 3,300-year-old artifacts associated with the boy-king's short reign. More than 90,000 advance tickets already have been sold for this year's Seattle exhibit.

Transplanting Tut-mania
Among the featured objects in Seattle are a 10-foot-tall statue of the pharaoh, Tut's golden sandals and the golden funerary mask of King Psusennes I. (Tut's golden mask, which was such a hit since the '70s, was judged too fragile and valuable to travel out of Egypt this time around.)

After Seattle, the more than 100 artifacts will go to the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, which is currently under construction and due for completion in 2015. At one time, Egyptian officials saw the revenue generated by traveling exhibits as a means to cover?the museum construction costs. But last year's revolution dealt a heavy blow to the country's tourist industry, and now officials think it's more important to bring museumgoers to the treasures in Egypt than to bring the treasures to museumgoers outside Egypt.

"They're eager to see these [artifacts] return to Egypt," said Bryan Harris, vice president of sales and marketing for Arts and Exhibitions International, which helped organize the Tut tour. And they're eager for tourists to follow Tut's trail.

That came through loud and clear during a Seattle news conference on Wednesday.?"Please, we need your help," Antiquities Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said. "We need you to support our revolution. We need you to support our movement toward peace and democracy."

Cleopatra's sunken treasures
The stars of the Tut exhibit are artifacts that were found 90 years ago in a long-hidden tomb by British archaeologist Howard Carter, but it's a different story for the more than 150 "Cleopatra" artifacts now on display in Los Angeles. They were brought to the surface just in the past few years during underwater excavations at the sunken sites of Alexandria, Heracleion and Canopus.

"All those artifacts were completely covered by sediment," French archaeologist Franck Goddio, leader of the underwater excavation, told me.

The project made a splash, so to speak, when the "Cleopatra" tour was first announced a couple of years ago, and since then it's been on display in Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. One more U.S. city, yet to be determined, could join the list after Los Angeles. But by the end of 2013, the statues, jewelry, coins and other items will be distributed among several Egyptian museums, Goddio said. Egyptian authorities are considering the construction of an underwater museum in Alexandria Harbor, and if that project goes forward, "all the artifacts will go in that museum," he said.

Goddio said the artifacts recovered so far suggest that Hellenistic Egypt, the culture in which Cleopatra lived during the first century B.C., was less Greek and much more Egyptian than experts previously thought. "The Egyptian sensitivity is much stronger than what it was thought to be at that time," he said. And that's all the more reason for present-day Egyptian officials to want those treasures back in their home country.

Fortunately, Goddio and others have been able to continue their work amid all of Egypt's political changes, including the run-up to this week's presidential elections there.

"Up to now, the authority has not changed," he told me, "and it's not expected that there will be any change from a scientific view." So even though the long-traveling treasures may be going home for good, there might be fresh archaeological finds available for future road trips.

And after all, Egypt isn't the only place that offers archaeological wonders. Just this month, for example, Penn Museum opened a "Maya 2012" exhibit featuring sculptures and replicas of monuments from the Maya civilization.

Harris acknowledges that Egypt doesn't hold a monopoly on ancient mysteries and marvels. Nevertheless, he says there's something special about old King Tut.?"An exhibit like 'Tutankhamun' is really like lightning in a bottle," he told me. "For some reason, Egyptian culture, and particularly Tutankhamun, seems to captivate the imagination more than any other. ... To be honest, there's only one."

Over the Counter & Prescription Allergy Medications

Allergy medications include antihistamines, decongestants, steroids, bronchodilators, mast cell stabilizers, leukotriene modifiers, combination drugs, over the counter products, and immunotherapy.

Many of these products are available in both over the counter and prescription grade. Most often it?s best to start with over the counter products and then consult your physician if your symptoms persist.

Antihistamines

Histamines cause allergy symptoms such as redness, swelling, itching, and bodily secretions. Allergens trigger immune system cells known as mast cells to release histamines into the body. Histamines attach to blood vessel receptors causing them to enlarge. This is a catalyst that stimulates all the other allergy symptoms that can occur. Antihistamines prevent these symptoms from occurring by blocking histamine receptors. Anti histamines are available bovver the counter and can be prescription taken as pills, liquid, nasal spray or eye drops. Over the counter antihistamines include Allegra, Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec and many more. Over the counter antihistamines can cause drowsiness. Non-sedative antihistamines are only available by prescription. Prescription antihistamines include Clarinex, Xyzal, Astelin as a nasal spray and Emadine and Livostin as eye drops.

Decongestants

Congestion is just one of many allergy symptoms. Blood vessel receptors in the nose swell and enlarge in response to allergens. Swelling produces mucous and fluid in the nasal passages, and throat and redness and swelling in the eyes. Decongestants shrink swollen tissues and blood vessels. They relieve symptoms of nasal swelling, congestion, mucus secretions and redness. Decongestants are often used alongside antihistamines to relieve allergy symptoms. Decongestants come in the forms of nasal sprays, eye drops, liquids, and pill forms. Nasal sprays and eye drop decongestants should only be used for a few days, because long-term use can make symptoms worse. Other forms of decongestants such as pills and liquid maybe taken for longer periods of time safely. Decongestants may raise blood pressure, cause insomnia, irritability and restrict urinary flow. Over the counter decongestants include Zyrtec- D, Sudafed, Afrin nasal sprays, Visine eye drops and Allegra D. Prescription decongestants such as Claritin D combine a decongestant with another allergy medicine.

Steroids

Steroids, also known as corticosteroids are used to reduce swelling and inflammation caused by allergic reactions. Steroids prevent and treat allergy symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, sneezing, and itchy and runny nose. For allergies you can take corticosteroid pills, steroid inhalers for asthma and nasal sprays for nasal allergies. Steroids are very effective at treating allergy symptoms but must be taken daily to prove their benefit. Start taking steroids 1-2 weeks even if you are not having allergy symptoms so they can build up in your system before you see their full effect. A physician must prescribe steroids. Side effects of steroid use include cough, hoarseness, yeast infection of the mouth, weight gain, fluid retention, high blood pressure, muscle weakness, diabetes, cataracts, and bone thinning. Nasal steroids include Flonase, Nasonex, Rhinocort and Beconase. Inhaled steroids include Azmacort, Flovent, Pulmicort, Advair and Symbicort. Steroids in the form of eye drops include Alrex and Dexamethasone. Oral steroids include Deltasone and Prednisone.

Mast Cell Stabilizers

Mast cell stabilizers stop the release of histamines form mast cells. When consumed mast cell stabilizers have an anti inflammatory effect to treat inflammation in the bronchial tubes. They are available in inhalers, eye drops, and nasal sprays. Much like steroids, mast cell stabilizers must be taken for several weeks to feel their full benefit in the body. Some side effects of mast cell stabilizers include throat irritation, coughing, skin rashes, burning, stinging or blurred vision. Mast cell stabilizers include Intal, Tilade, Crolom, Alomide, Opticrom, Alamast and Nasalcrom.?

Combination Drugs

Combination drugs for allergies contain both an antihistamine and a decongestant to reduce multiple symptoms at the same time. Other combinations include an allergy medicine with an asthma medication and an antihistamine with a mast cell stabilizer. Over the counter combination allergy medications include Allegra D, Caritan D, Zyrtec D, Benadryl Allergy and Sinus and Tylenol Allergy and Sinus.? Prescription grade medications include Semprex D, Naphcom, Vasocon, Zaditor, Patanol and Optivar.

MEElectronics A161P

You may not be familiar with MEElectronics, but the audio manufacturer makes earphones worthy of comparison to bigger name brands like Shure and AKG. There's nothing particularly alluring about the visual design of the simple MEElectronics A161P, but this $99.99 (direct) pair offers solid audio performance, iPhone controls, and a treasure trove of accessories. Some distortion on deep bass tracks at maximum volumes keeps the A161P from being a masterpiece. But at $100 it's a great option, and worthy of consideration for anyone who doesn't listen to deep bass music exclusively?or does so at reasonable volume levels.

Design
Aside from a gold-colored band that separates the black eartips from the glossy black plastic portion of the earpieces, the A161P is fairly nondescript. A small inline compartment along the right ear's cable houses the phone controls and microphone. These controls also double as a remote for the music menus on the iPhone. The 3.5mm connector is narrow enough to have no issue fitting into most cell phone cases.

The A161P ships with more accessories than a typical earphone pair in this price range. Included are 6 pairs of black silicone eartips in various sizes, half of which are flange-shaped, and half of which are simple, rounded eartips. Two adapters are also in the box: one TRS adapter for smartphones that don't use the typical 3.5mm headphone jack, and another for connecting to both the audio output of your PC and the microphone output, so you can use the earphones for video calls. Two soft, flexible cable guides for looping the cable over your ears are included (though the fit is secure enough that you may not need them), plus a shirt clip and a zip-up protective case.

Performance
At maximum volume, the A161P suffers from some serious distortion on deep bass tracks. This, however, is forgivable for a couple of reasons. First, the price of $100 is reasonable and doesn't enter audiophile territory; bass distortion at high volumes is fairly common below $150 or so. Second, at very high volumes short of maximum, the distortion is not an issue, and the bass response is indeed deep and resonant. So, while The Knife's "Silent Shout" does distort when you crank the volume to top, painfully-loud levels, at moderately high volumes it sounds clean and intense.

On classical music, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the A161P sounds fantastic even at maximum volume; it's clean and robust, delivering the lower register strings with a slight, pleasant boost of the low frequency range. At more moderate levels, the mids and highs take center stage on both classical and pop music. At medium volume, in fact, the A161P offers a great balance between low frequency push and clarity in the higher ranges.

The clarity of the microphone and earphones for phone calls is nothing to write home about?you can understand what your call partner is saying without any real issues, but, especially cell-phone-to-cell-phone, don't expect the A161P to improve your phone's clarity. There does seem to be a minor lag or delay on some calls, but nothing significant enough to cause any communication issues.

Conclusions
In the $100 price range, the A161P has some serious competition. At a lower price, the AKG K 350 ($79.95, 4 stars) doesn't sound quite as good, but is excellent for its price. If you're looking for an earphone pair that offers more booming bass in this price range, consider the Paradigm Shift e3m ($129.99, 3.5 stars). The excellent Shure SE215 ($119, 4 stars) is just slightly more expensive, but offers a detachable cable, which extends the life of the product by being replaceable and adds some value to the price. If you're just looking for an affordable earphone pair for listening to music and making calls on your iPhone, the Skullcandy FIX In-Ear ($69.95, 3.5 stars) offers reasonable quality at a much lower price.

All told, the MEElectronics A161P's distortion isn't really a deal-breaker, as at safe-to-moderatly loud listening levels the bass performance is deep and distortion-free. It also has plenty of value to offer in solid audio perrformance, and in the form of all of those useful accessories (something you don't often see with more expensive pairs).
